Agaricus Blazei (almond portabello)?
    #4182620 - 05/16/05 04:57 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I have read some very interesting things about this in GGMM and it seems to have very good characteristics of taste and some promising health benefits. It also seems like it would be a good choice to grow outdoors (grows in composted soil with a more forgiving casing etc. than portabello) and is heat tolerant. However, while searching the web I cannot find anyone who supplies spawn or culture for it (though some sell small kits for it). It is supposedly more common than realized in the SE (naturally growing). Does anyone have any experience, comments, or know of spawn/culture sources for this mushroom (FP dosen't carry it)?

hey! missed this post at first...

mushroompeople.com have an unrestricted culture for $45
FP doesn't sell a culture but they sell a kit, which you can get spore prints from, for $25

I could also send you a culture I got from trading here, I haven't fruited it yet but am in the process of grain spawn. See my post in marketplace and PM me..

Thanks for the helpful links! I am not quite ready yet to accomodate culture but will check back with you when I am. I had missed that section on blazei on mushworld. FP notified me that their AB is currently unavailable due to problems with culture(??).

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I have found Agaricus subrufescens, a species that may be the same as Blazeii,
in two habitats outdoors. Well, one habitat and two different substates, I found it
in the duff under pines and spruce and in wood chips under pine.
The fruitings on wood chips were larger. I have heard of them fruiting on just wood chips.

I don't know about the health benifits, they are very tasty. They retain they're flavor
well when frozen. Agaricus Augustus and Agaricus abruptabulbous are two other species that are closely related to blazeii, that share the strong almond flavor and when fresh, stain bright yellow on the surface when bruised.
