I went to a private high school.  On scholarship.

Private school? Dude, no wonder you supported Romney, I bet mommy and daddy gave you most of your "assets" as well. You'll never understand the common man, and thinking that you're above him because of your narrow minded intellect makes you even more of a fool.

That aside, what makes this even funny is that we all KNOW and ACKNOWLEDGE the libertarian factor to Romney's defeat. For crying out loud, the brain-eating ROMNIEZ made a failing bid at attracting RP's supporters to beat Obama, and we all know how that turned out. It's even funnier when Romney keeps stating that campaign funds, hurricane sandy, and "gifts" are the reason why Obama won. Keep dreaming dude.

What part of "scholarship" was a mystery to you?  My parents gave me $2,000 when I graduated from college in 1979.  That was it.  They weren't rich by any definition, although they were certainly upper middle class.  When your kid tests at the top and you live in a town of 800 people and he can get a scholarship you send him.

As far as I know Romney didn't say anything about campaign funds and it was Clinton who said that Sandy was a factor.  But he is entirely right, just as he was when he talked about the 47%, that Obama bought votes with promises of government largesse.

Why he would even try to attract the Paulbot vote is beyond me.  They certainly weren't going to vote for Obama.

You were still lucky to have a stable home, which I presume you did if you managed to complete high school doing well.  Plenty of kids don't have that chance, and grow up in an environment of insecurity due to the choices of their parents.  One you're out of highschool, its a lot harder to get scholarships of much impact in my experience.

No I wasn't.  Back then, before the Great Society, a stable home was the fucking norm.

My daughter got a free ride to Stony Brook entirely on merit.  More people get free rides now than did when I was in college.  Maybe you just aren't smart enough.
Everybody is a victim of their parents.  By enabling more and more losers to have babies we are creating more and more losers.  Devolution.  No more checks without working for them.  We'll see how the welfare queens feel about squirting out yet more defective children from their defective selves.

Well, regardless, it was a factor beyond your control that helped you.  Its not easy coming out of a home of crazy people- and the courts seem to make it worse.

I can pretty much guarentee I've done better than your daughter in the classes I've taken, and I've won every scholarship I applied for and qualified for as a white guy- all of them merit scholarships.  It added up to between 1,000 and 2,000 per year.

Please list the scholarships your daughter qualified for not on the basis of her highschool record.  I'll wait.

Cuz every one of mine was based solely on college performance- outperforming kids like your daughter who were on a full ride.

She got a scholarship to law school.  20K a year not predicated on top performance which is a big deal.

The chances that you did better than my daughter, who graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa is just about nil.

Yes, postgraduate scholarships of good value are awarded based on college performance, but that wasn't what I was talking about.  You have to graduate (and pay) first for that to happen.

Anyways, your daughter has done better than me since she's graduated, but I did stipulate in the classes I've taken when meeting your challenge.  But I did get the highest score in the history of one of my core science classes (going back maybe 13 years or something) and was top of the class or top 3 in several others (big lectures with 60-100 people), so I'm still willing to bet you are wrong.

My university offers ten scholarships for academic performance in college per year- $500 each.  That's for something like 13,000 students.  Then the outside professional society offers one per year for the major I am pursuing (based on merit anyways, not based on having the right racial features).  I won both coming out of less than three years of high school and a ridiculous family situation.

Shit like that isn't easy, and its simply not true that good performance wins you a free ride neccessarily.  You first have to have the good high school performance which isn't very easy with shitloads of court orders hanging over your head and your parents acting like jackals.

I am going to ask this critical question yet again.  WHAT EDUCATION?  There is no discernible use for all the English, Social Science, Art History, Any History, Russian literature, et fucking cetera, majors we are producing  They are 90% fucking useless.

That in a free market society with sound money a person can do what he or she likes and earn a sustainable wage regardless of education, race, creed, sexual orientation, or religion. In other words, the American dream.

What you say about the uselessness of some majors may be true to an extent, but I feel that the problems we face in today's society are to blame and need to be corrected.

You really make no solutions, you only bicker and tout your intellect around as if it was the most superior on this forum. Possibly because you haven't had true freedom in your lifetime, and you're venting your frustration on this generation for passionately fighting for what you never had. Have fun with it, but an intellect with no will, resolve, and a cynical attitude can easily be outperformed by a nitwit with will, courage, and resolve.

Speaking of, there aren't as many scholarships as there were back in the days. Of course college tuition is more expensive now, so it's no wonder why. Learning in all forms is part of life, and people should study and learn what excites them; however, its starting to cost an arm and a leg. Unfortunately, dwindling economic conditions, steadily rising inflation and unemployment makes Zappa's comment on degree usefulness mostly true.
