Death is just a belief

Many "New Age" authors such as Sixpac Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Leonard Orr and others have espoused the view that the inevitablity of aging and death is merely a thought or belief.

*Coughs* Hogwash!

Surprisingly(!), each one of those nutcases looks their age.


But lets look at this supposition that death is merely an indoctrination.

1. Animals die without being "brainwashed".

2. Retards and imbeciles too dense to understand still die.

3. Humans aware of this "false belief" still die.

4. Human cells unaware of this "fact" stop reproducing after X number of cell divisions.

Sidenote: As sclorch and posse can attest to: The Swam has so far defied aging, but that is for another thread. :wink:

I think they're referring to your conscious. I personally dont believe your consciousness will fade away, just expirence different roles in its neverending journey. Think about it. Dont you FEEL your consciousness? It isnt a series of chemical reactions my friend. Its an seperate entity from your body. You can feel its connection to your body. The brain is merely an antennae for receiving the transmissions of your conscious. Or maybe its just me - I could be wrong :\

Swami, I think what is meant by "death" being a belief is that the definition of death is simply a belief. How do you define death and what evidence do you have that it is so different from life?

I completely agree that death and the "natural" loss of consciousness after death is simply a belief.

I have two ways of thinking about "death" as a belief, which I won't try to reconcile right now, but I'll just put them out there for consideration:

1) Yes, death is just a belief, because it is simply something defined as the binary opposite of something else that we merely believe to exist.

2) No, death is not a belief, because we have defined death and all that is relevant is whether or not the definition is functional, which it is.

if you view reality as multi dimensional, it is plausible that through some sort of mental/spiritual conditioning you could exert your will over which of the infinite possibilities your awareness would occupy. so you only die in other people's realities, not yours. this would give some more realisticly termed goal: to work your way through the possible realities until you get to the realm of true forms. along the way it wouldn't seem like anything extraordinary because everyone else in "your" reality would be going through the same things.

the trick would be to keep together a cosmic tribe of similarly in tune members.

I've died many times, but I keep coming back.

so I guess the key to immortality (on this planet anyway) is to ring up a lot of karmic debts before you die. then they'll send you back to pay that shit off...

that theory can work if it means that your mind cannot experience death, because it will disintegrate into oblivion before you die, therefor, if death is something the mind cannot experience, then it doesnt exist. What in this world exists that the mind cannot experience???? nothing! on a mental level anyways, you dig?>

I don't know, i'm 28 and i look like am 19. I usually have a low transpiration, it seems my body temperature is always stable, sometimes people call me crazy when they see me with too many cloth while being hot (to them). My family has a long life record, 90 years and up, my grandfather was almost 80 and he looked like he was 50.
I believe it's all about genetics, healthy diets and healthy environments.

I love reading the female personal adds. One says "I am 55, but look 45." The next one says "I am 45, but look 35." Another says, "I am 35, but look 25."

Using the patented Swami extrapolation method, then the 55 yo actually looks 25! But don't bet on it.

I believe it's not that linear Swami, you have to know how the different variables work to come up with an accurate conclusion. I don't know the variables, i just know there are people like this.

MAIA, Swami used the words "don't bet on it", which indicates a probability (i.e. fallibilism). The door is thus left open for oddities and extremely rare incidences, but for the most part, old people look old.
