the cloud of unknowing
    #17162866 -

A Christian work from the mid 14th century. Just starting it. But the first real mystical idea put forth was this:

God is not intellectually knowable to any man, woman, or child. To pursue God in this way is to forget where we are. Which is the cloud of unknowing. But, the author says, God is knowable through love. So be careful how you spend your time.

I have to love God to know God?  Why I would I love something I know nothing about in the first place?  :crazy2:

So, one concept is knowable through another..

Acts of love are acts of God.

That's how I interpret those statements.
Every human emotion we base our actions on stem from the basic emotion of love, which is God.

Your interpretation Kickle?

What exactly would an act of love be? I'd like some acts of lust to come my way, but out here are plants and trees, ignore them too. These insights have been misused to prevent thought, as in an acts of love as torturing people who spoke thoughts to death. Is there any future for reason? What use is reason when there is no space? Immigration policies that rob my space are justified as acts of love.

i cant remember the exact quote but its something along the lines of 'you can spend your whole life trying to know god through your intellect & not come to know god, but in one moment of love you know the whole of god' could even be from what your reading...

You know what an act of love is.
When you do something that positively influences another being, both you and the other are affected by it.

Feeling is a universal language among our world.

That others from long ago share my sense of unknowability, of ignorance, and of the futility of knowledge to solve the problem. As for love being the answer? I've said here before that at the very least my experience with the pursuit of love is far more affirming than my experience with the pursuit of knowledge. I still exist in a cloud of unknowing and as far as I can tell so did everyone who wrote about not being able to know. And IME it becomes the best place to be when you start spending your time loving instead of continually striving to know.

He was a shitty salesman tho and that's what I like about him. The first few lines tell anyone who isn't already a Christian to piss off and not bother with the book

i would like to be loving but i would hate to be one of those people who's judgement seems clouded by love, or who just says the word 'love' alot :argh:

maybe those are the people who take love as a form of knowing...

Word. My major qualm with Christianity is what I see as an offloaded responsibility of wisdom.

First thing that popped into my mind:

Thanks for the book idea. I found a version online and read a few chapters. Not bad.

I really like how in Buddhism it is taught to develop both compassion and wisdom simultaneously. When I was taking meditation classes at the Buddhist center near my house last year, the teacher made the analogy that wisdom and compassion are two wings of a bird, and if a bird is to fly, the wings can't be lopsided. Makes sense. I know in my life, if I focus more on one then the other, I get the out of balance feel, causing me to come crashing down.
