PEI Shroom Season

Hey Shroomery Forums!

I've been a long time auditor of this website and I decided to create a thread about the PEI, Canada Shroom Season. The type of mushroom I'll be hunting is the 'Psilocybe semilanceata' or more commonly known as Liberty Caps.

Now I've already done a heft amount of research on these suckers and I feel it is the correct time to go out for my first hunt. Weather is now dipping below 4-10 deterers Celsius at night and it's not very hot during the day.

My family owns some farm land (three large fields) but no animals. This past season we grew soy so I won't be able to find any on that land. However there is a large grassland prior to the fields that is might point to start the hunt but there is also sparse woodland to hunt through as well.

My question is has anyone ever hunted for Liberty caps? If so does it require fields with plentiful dung and also is it worth my time looking through the forest a bit.

Apparently they 'grow everywhere' on PEI so finding them shouldn't be a problem.

Any tips would be appreciated.

PS: Before I consume ANY Shroom I will properly identify them with my current knowledge of the mushroom and I'll also post any pictures of the types of mushrooms I find.

This person is from PEI so it might give you an idea of some other mushrooms you might find. She hasn't found any Liberty Caps yet though so maybe they're not as easy as you're hoping.

They can grow on any grassland, yes. Best of all they like sheep fields, then cow, then anything else (Golf courses, football pitches, grave yards erc.) You won't find them in the forest however you will find lots of other cool mushrooms there. Good luck!

I'm also potato harvesting right now so I don't have a lot of time. I was going to go out today but every bone/muscle in my body is screaming LIE DOWN ON THE GAD DAMN COUCH.

Hopefully! It will rain tonight and tomorrow so I get another day off to hunt. I'll let you know if I find anything and hope you'll do the same!

Hi, I'm new to the island and I might have found some gym sp. I'll post photos of spore prints when I get it. I was wondering if anyone has tried them? If so how are they?

Bad luck bro, I was out the last 4 days on my farm and didn't found a single liberty cap. The cow pasture had nothing, but there was a ton of look alikes in the horse pasture (very different soil). I looked for a good hour each day, and 2 hours today. Went over to the neighbors.

On the bright side, when we went 2 weeks ago there wasn't any musshrooms at all. Maybe this is a good sign?

I'm on the western side of the island, btw. We have a pretty different habitat than the east.

Hey, does anyone know if the shrooms are sprouting yet? I heard last monday was the first frost and that they would be. Also someone told me you flick and pick, is this necessary if not what is the point of it?

I haven't found any yet. Been looking every day for 5 days now I think? It could just be my location though I've been finding a lot of different kinds each time I go. Bound to get liberty caps at one point.

The reason you flick and pick is to release the spores so more can grow

So I was about looking today and I think I may have come across some liberties I'm going to check them out now, do they grow in places other them cow fields? I had the scariest experience when a bull chased me out last night and I don't think going there again would be wise and don't know of any others around, if not what other types of mushies are there that I can find here and how might I identify them?

Hey guys, I've picked liberty caps in newfoundland last year and had like a half pound from oct 18 - nov 15, Since then I moved to PEI and i've been searching for the last 2 weeks and haven't found nothing! I seen some of the posts on here and it looks like you all are having good luck!

There is a cow field directly across the road from my house and i've been looking on it for the last 2 weeks and no luck, aswell there is a horse field behind my house with like 4 huge fields.

Just woundering why they aint growing there? I figured the cow field would be perfect for them to grow cause there is cow dung everywhere and it's perfectly fertilized for libertys.

And question, Do liberty caps grow on horse fields? There is lots of horse dung around.. I found some wierd looking mushrooms there but not libertys :/.

Side note, There is a field like 25 mins from my house, short sage grass and it was fertilized with cow dung 7 days ago, Would it be worth my time to go down there and take a look? I mean would liberty caps grow on a new fertilized field that quickly?

Any feed back would be appreciated thanks :>D.
