Public Nudity Poll
    #16942301 -

So chances are wherever you may live there are laws in place that make being partially or fully nude in public a crime in many instances.  While there may be parades, festivals, and nude beaches where nudity is allowed or tolerated at certain times, it's generally considered "indecent exposure" to stroll down a public street in most of the US while completely nude.

The laws surrounding public nudity are often not equal between men and women.  In most places (in the US at least) it is not unlawful for a man to be without a top in public, while it is unlawful for a woman to be without a top in public.  I think that should be a huge red flag that something's wrong already.

Obviously clothes can serve a practical purpose (protection, insulation, item storage, to represent/advertise something, other aesthetic reasons, etc.) and it is beneficial to wear clothes at certain times.  But when did it become the norm to cover up our bodies even when it wasn't necessary?  I've read a few theories on the origin of clothing worn by Homo sapiens.  One theory is that we are the only surviving primate to wear clothes, and we copied from another species.  Another is that during the last or maybe during an earlier of the ice ages it became necessary for us to wear clothes for survival and it just became a cultural norm to wear clothes even when the weather began to permit nakedness again many years later.  Another theory is we started wearing clothes to combat feelings of low self-esteem/shame/inadequacy, jealousy, feelings of being offended, or all of the above.

I've informally debated the subject of public nudity with people before, and those who defend indecency laws often use the same arguments.  Some of the most popular arguments I can think of would be for religious/spiritual regions, sanitation, it's offensive/immoral, and rape rates.  I'm not ok with basing laws on religious/spiritual grounds.  Sanitation I can understand, but regulations requiring one to wear a certain amount of clothing to use public benches, public transportation, or in other situations when one's naked body would be in contact with public stuff would be preferable to outright "no public nudity."  I don't think people have the right to not be offended, and I don't think it's appropriate to constantly try to legislate morality.  I honestly have no idea if there is any evidence to suggest that nudity = more rape, but it kind of sounds like bs.  If someone has some decent evidence from studies done about rape in nudist/naturist colonies or something I would be interested in seeing it.

I've been told society would assuredly fall should largely unrestricted public nudity ever be permitted.  I really doubt it though.  For one, there are places in the US that already allow public nudity under free speech, but that free speech isn't exercised too often by the majority.  I think Oregon is a state that allows public nudity as an expression of free speech, as long as there is no "intent to arouse" (whatever the fuck that means ).  Most people in Oregon wear clothes in public though.

I think if public nudity suddenly became legal , most people would be reluctant to take advantage of the freedom at first.  As a culture we're raised to be ashamed of nudity and to cover certain parts of our body, and that probably wouldn't fade over night.  There would likely be a slow transition into it being an acceptable practice to go walk around the neighborhood naked.  Would it distract people at first, at least for a few years until the majority of our culture is born into a society where public nudity doesn't have the same stigma as the past?  I think that's a reasonable assumption of how it would play out, but I don't see that as being all that negative.  People fear change, and if change is too big or too fast people might freak out.  Slow transition might be less problematic.

I understand there are many people who find the human body offensive, or at least particular human bodies.  I realize not everybody wants to look at a big, naked, hairy dude.  But I don't think it's anyone's right to not be offended.  The sheer range of things people get offended by is outstanding.  I just don't understand I guess.  Seriously what the fuck, how have people become conditioned to be offended by nudity, the human body in it's natural state?  Are there people who close their eyes when they change clothes or shower?

Being nude in public doesn't appear to be inherently harmful to clothed people or other nude people, nor is it destructive to people's private property.  I don't think it impedes on the freedom of others.  I don't think nudity is necessarily sexual, but I personally don't think it should matter if it was.  I don't have a problem with it.  I think it would be great if people had the choice to not wear clothes in public while not facing legal repercussions should they choose to be naked.

I don't think there actually are any public nudity laws where I live, but nobody does anything about it.

There are a lot of parades in Frisco where people go naked, but it's always a fetishized kind of thing...

I'd like to see the kind of cultural changes that would have to go hand-in-hand with nudism. I can only expect civilization would be a nicer way to live if people didn't learn to take shame for granted as part of being socialized. As it is, people are fucking stuck-up and it can't be unlearned, it's kind of a viral meme.

I've heard SF doesn't have any laws with regards to "indecent exposure," but if someone calls in and complains for nudity you can be fined for being a disturbance, or nuisance, or something.  I have no idea if there's any truth to that.

I do know that if someone calls in a naked guy around here he'd better run, because a cop or three will be looking to taze his ass.

I think it would be interesting to chill with a nudist/naturist colony for a few months and observe the differences in social behavior.  There's probably quite a bit of existing documentation, I just haven't looked into it much.  Even though I advocate public nudity, I can't say I see it becoming much more prevalent than it is now for quite some time.  The people I've had discussions with just seemed vehemently against it for whatever reason was most convenient to them.

It's really hard to get over it. If you think about going naked your mind immediately comes up with bullshit excuses for why it's necessary to wear clothes. I just started to defend the need for clothes in the city, as if it was somehow rougher on the skin to be in the city than in a more natural setting. :picard:

I would imagine that it starts off as something learned, but as the body ages it grows to be more dependent on clothes because the skin never gets the chance to weather the elements. There's my knee-jerk reflex argument in favor of clothes. :awesome:

There's pockets where you keep your phone and wallet, but you could also have a purse (or murse), and have more space while still getting to go naked.

I'm practically a nudist as it is, I'm 100% for any legislation that would allow me to not wear pants more often.

In Columbus girls can go topless. I think this seems fine, and whatever social norms almost always take precedence, but honestly I'm not really looking to see a bunch of nude people. I understand why I think this way, and I get it's not "natural" or whatever, but as long as there's equality and all that grand shit I'm fine with not seeing people dicks and vags just walking down the street.

There's no true equality as long as there are clothes, unless everybody gets equally nice suits.

I'm afraid Mother Nature is a bleeding communist.

Yes, obviously equality isn't as simple as chicks and dudes both being able to go topless. With the context of the topic though I don't think it's very difficult to understand what I'm talking about.

Honestly people can wear all the clothes they want as far as I care. I just think there shouldn't be any social or legal consequences of public nudity; I mean what's the big fucking deal?

Clothing is just a way for the evil overlords to conceal their presence burrowed into the backs of the elites, firmly attached to their brainstems. Why do you think the wealthy and politicians wear so many layers of clothing? Because it's comfortable?

Seriously though, seriously. :ancientaliens:

Ya know, there was a time in my life where I considered myself a "nudist" just because I loved walking around my house with no clothes on and cherished those days where I would wake up at 2pm, and play video games in boxers until 8pm without any other clothes on.

But then I realized, that's probably just about everybody.

I also like to walk around my yard naked, and I don't really freak out about nudity that much.

But really, I think that a good portion of the self-proclaimed "nudists" don't take into account some of the least aesthetically-pleasing people in this society that we would have to be exposed to, should nudity laws be removed.

i honestly think nudity laws are stupid, but its one of the few stupid laws i am fine with. i don't really want to see most people naked.

also, would you want to sit in a seat that some naked hobo was sitting in? i mean even if i have pants on i'm not going to want to sit in a seat with streak of shit on it.

It certainly seems learned.  I remember when I was 3 it was not uncommon for kids my age or younger to strip down and streak to freedom with all they had.  I don't know if I've ever seen a kid more excited than at times like those, and I certainly can't recall them exhibiting any shame whatsoever.  Parents bathe multiple kids at a time and there doesn't seem to be shame or vulnerability until they start to get older.

Sometimes I wonder if clothing is a product of the attempt to repress sexuality in children, whether intentional or subconsciously I don't know.  When I was about 7 or 8 I remember playing with myself sometimes, but only in the bathtub.  When I was wearing clothes it was basically out of sight, out of mind.  My parents basically never taught me about sex or anything so I learned from a mixture of public school sex-ed and older kid's bullshit.  I don't really know many people who have parents that talked to them about that kind of stuff.  When I was 17 my dad said, "Always use a condom," and that was the extent of our overdue birds and bees talk.

I guess for a lot of people it can be difficult to be open about sexuality with kids.  There's this presumed innocence people attribute to children, and sex is often seen as dirty and carnal.  Maybe for some parents it feels like sexuality talk is corrupting their kid's youth or marring their innocence.  Ending their childhood in a way.  Maybe it's a death anxiety thing, a subconscious reminder of your mortality as you watch a kid age.

Maybe our ancestors found clothes helped postpone all that for a short while, and at the same time incited a sense of feeling special, above the rest of the animals.  We probably realized we were smarter by then, as tools were probably around before clothes, but our apparel was a physical reminder of differentiation from the rest of the animal kingdom.  Damn, I didn't even think about death anxiety in the OP but it I think it could easily be a factor in the origin of clothes/shame of nakedness.

I can say for sure I had somewhat of a handle on the concept of death by 4 at the latest.  I definitely remember that.  By that time being naked had started to feel different.  There wasn't really shame, yet, but more of an an elating feeling because I was learning that I was supposed to be clothed.  It was taboo, and I was aware.  Before that clothes just felt uncomfortable, so being naked felt good in the sense of less restriction I guess.  I think for me at age 4 nudity became a much different concept.

It's a lot of speculating though.  On my part at least.

Since you're "aware" of why you probably don't want to see a bunch of nude people, do you think it's easier for your views to change or do you feel cultural conditioning ingrained from such a young age is too strong to overcome?

That's probably one of the arguments I hear the most, is that ugly people will be naked too.  It wouldn't bother me at all, but I do think if public nudity became legal tomorrow, most of the people with lower self-esteem would continue to wear clothes.  I don't think cultural norms would change quickly even if that law did, and those people would be some of the last to embrace nudity.

As it became more and more accepted, more people with lower self-esteem would try nudity.  You would be exposed to them slowly over time, so maybe that would "lessen the blow" and you would be accustomed to seeing that kind of stuff with no effort.

But is seeing the "least aesthetically-pleasing people" naked so much worse than seeing them clothed?

yea so my view is basically covered in the last poll. i see it as a sanitation issue especially in the US. i personally don't think the norm of ass wiping after a shit get the job completely done, personally i prefer to take a shower after i shit just because it takes forever to wipe my ass completely clean sometimes. even pissing is a little nasty, if i take a piss while cuddling naked with a lady or something i wipe my dick off because shaking doesn't get the job completely done and if you were in public shaking until you got ever last drop it would take more than you standard 2 or 3 shakes and people would think your jacking off...

i would only be in favor if restrooms had some kind of shower head to actually wash your ass clean like they do in other countries, i suppose the dick pee drip could be easily handled with napkins in the restroom or the normal paper towels, but many bathrooms are going the "earth friendly" no paper towel route with only dryers...

that would be my opinion if i got over seeing repulsive people naked, really they are repulsive even with cloths on so it probably wouldn't be hard to adjust to.
