Free mushroom growing supplies at....Starbucks!

Funnily enough, I nearly asked my local Starbucks last year to give me all their coffee grounds to grow 'shrooms with.

Imagine my surprise yesterday, when I found my local Starbucks actually packaging up spent grounds and putting them in a "free, just take what you want" basket.

I'm sure that their reasons for doing this aren't 100% environmental (commercial waste is an expensive business), but it's nice to be able to get decent quantities of coffee grounds without having to drink 400 cups a day ;-)

Also brings up the point that I would imagine any coffee house will hand over the grounds if you ask them nicely.

Yeah, that has been my experience too, except that I was using the coffee grounds for my tomatoes.

Wow, thats freaky. I was in Star$$$ today looking at the spent coffee they give away for free in that basket. And I thought "I wonder if that'll make a good casing material?"

I'll pick some up tomorrow. :tongue:

I don't know. I do not think that it has very good physical properties for a casing. It does not hold water well, also I think it is a little too nutrient rich and would contam a bit to easyily. You'd want to for sure correct the acidity. Also I have messed aroung with "coffee" cakes and oysters and coffee grounds and straw mixes. Generally I was underwhelmed. I never did use it as a casing though so give it a try. Report back.

I also used to give coffee grounds to the worms in my worm composter, but they did not like it and I think it made it too acidic.

I got all my grounds at starbucks when I was growing oysters. I love how they package them for you. I tried this at other cofee houses, and got a couple trash bags filled with all sorts of trash mixed in with the grounds.
