Pretty sure this is a scam.....but how?

So, I posted my old android phone on craigslist for sale, I was expecting a few scammers.

Put the phone up for $150

Sure enough, one guy asking about it, and says he wants the phone but is out of state (in GA,, across the country.. although probably not)
He offers me 250 for the phone and 100 for shipping it to him. So that's instantly right there, 2 giant red flags.

Says he can pay through Western Union, paypal, or email money transfer. I tell him Western Union is fine.

Now I know how very easy it is for buyers to scam through Paypal. That is one of the oldest tricks in the book.
And the fake check thing, where they send you a fraudulent check, as soon as you get it they demand you send it, you send and then 3 days later your bank closes your account for depositing a fraudulent check. 

But how exactly could someone scam through Western Union? I told him I will not send it until the money is received. He says that's fine.

I'm 99% sure I won't go through with it, as I specifically put in my ad I would only meet in person in a public place.

But I'm just wondering... how the fuck could a buyer possibly scam through western union?

Western union is a common scam for people SELLING stuff.. offer something for sale... use fake info.. get paid through western union... never send anything.

But how is it possible someone scams when BUYING through western union? If they send the money first? I just don't see it.

Like I said I'm pretty sure it's a scam. But how??

He's got other peoples' credit card information. I knew kids who were 13-14 years old and doing this stuff. You could make money from the transaction, but it wouldn't be this guy's money. Unless you see thief as a legit job.

Ahh. That makes sense then. So stolen credit card... real money... it gets sent and then I somehow get fucked. Or helped in fucking someone else over. No thanks.

I've got a couple e-mails from people on Craigslist--always the  I ;ive in BumFuck USA, so I can't meet you, I'm buying it for my nephew, etc, do you have a Paypal Account (western union.)

Tell them to send the money via Walmart Moneygram......  :smirk:

You got to have cash to send and an ID AND they have to give you the ID number.

I've been lucky I guess, all my buying and selling on craigslist has gone without incident. No lowballers or shady deals. Meeting in person is a must if you want to ensure not getting screwed.

Yeah I specifically put in my ad "I will ONLY meet in PERSON, in a PUBLIC place, to do the transaction.

So instant red flags when you get a message like that.

And yeah I told him I'll do moneygram, and he's all no can't don't have those have to do western union.

So I gave him all the OIG info I linked in the first post

You can't do a chargeback on WU so it's pretty safe.

Yeah I realize that, that's why I was curious how it could be a scam, because it SCREAMED scam to me. But I know scammer buyers almost always want to use Paypal.
Western Union is good for scammer sellers. Not so good for buyers at all.


But what SWEDEN says makes a lot of sense. He could be using a stolen credit card, I don't really want to fuck someone else over.
And/or get investigated for receiving stolen credit card money, even if I could plead ignorance

kinda off topic, but a few years ago i was selling my old recliner for 50.00. the first guy that show up offered an 8ball of coke. i told him no, only cash. he ends up buying the recliner then kicking it at my house sharing that 8ball. no, i did not pay for any of it.

At my work, I post dozens of craigslist ads a day. On the nicer things like watches, antiques, etc, I get tons of spam.
I probably get 40-60 spam emails a day. I get 3 kinds of spam.

1. Out of town, ship via courier and will mail (fake) check.

2. hi pls wll u trde 4 this? (With a link to an amazon item. Usually a camera. Sometimes, the offered item is worth as little as 10% as the item for sale.)

3. It is still for sale??

Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T (or some other carier) (looking for me to reply and give them my email address)


You get to learn how to skim through them. As soon as anyone says "advert" or "I'm religious, trust me" it's a scam.

I hate to thread jack, but how would you sell a (relatively) expensive item on craigslist?  Like 2-3k? 

I'm thinking of getting a new TV, and if I don't like it, I'd like a place to unload it.

You'll end up getting 1/2 the money you spent for it.
I'd get the TV, then return it if you don't like it.

Actually, now that I think of it.

You could use your phone to scam people. Ask for money first, then don't send the phone. Repeat until rich.


But seriously, I've noticed that people that want to buy or rent from you always send short messages that go straight to the point. People that send huge paragraph with stories about their kids and grand kids are the people that want to scam you.

I'm ordering online, and don't want to deal with returning a 70" TV.

It goes for 3k in store and is still the newest model, so I think I could get 2k out of it.

You might, but TV's have terrible resale value. Why wouldn't you get one in a store?
