Grizzly Bear - SHIELDS
    #16928637 -

Finally hooked me like an addiction.  Easily my favorite album by these gents.  I was surprised I couldn't find anything via Search Posts.  Does no one else have this album yet?  I'm in awe of it, "Gun-Shy" might be my favorite song they've ever recorded.

First track, Sleeping Ute

Sounds like a shipwreck waiting to happen.  I love how Bear's percussion sounds like a storm inching nearer.

Still not released, right? I haven't listened to it yet, I wasn't too pumped on Veckatimest and I imagine they will just keep straying farther and farther from what I enjoyed of theirs.

Perhaps I'll put it on though, no reason not to.

Edit: Oh it leaked like almost a month ago, it must be released by now.

Yeah dude, it took a few listens for me to really get into it.  Alot better than Veckatimest in my opinion.  That album was half-good.  This one is a fucking masterpiece.  It sucks, they just played near me a few days ago and I opted not to go (cause it was $60!).  If only I'd given Shields a fair shake last week...

This track might be more up your alley.  Has a foundation that's reminiscent of Yellow House.  Gotta love Rossen's guitar in the chori, :holyshit:

Shields is downright fucking fantastic.
"Half Gate," "The Hunt," and "Sun in Your Eyes" are my favorites.
It's a grower, that is for sure
but a absolutely beautiful one at that.

I've been engaging in solo bowl cruises lately
while listening to it, and it really compliments the night.

Been with Grizzly Bear since Yellow House,
and boy do they just keep churning out gold.

Awesome, glad to know there are fans here!
Yeah Half Gate is another knockout.  The setting in of the chorus gives me chills.  All those songs are incredible for sure.

Yeah, it's a shame.
I think because it's not as immediately grabbing as Veckatimest,
it got over looked by a lot, a LOT, of people.

Because I feel like Veckatimest was one of 2009's most hyped,
and listened to.

I've been pushing it over facebook though. :awesomenod:

Me too but no one's biting
My real friends suck, none of them listen to the stuff I do so I'm used to that.

For me, every one of Grizzly Bear's albums have had to grow on me.  I still can't really get behind Horn of Plenty.  But it's okay because they're a band that can do many different things very well.  Veckatimest had songs I didn't care for, like Dory, but I still realize how well the songs were crafted.

I don't think Shields is an album for everybody.  To me it's their born-to-write album.  And that's saying alot.

So far... it's okay. Just not really the kind of thing I'm much into at the moment I guess. I mean it sounds fine, but I just don't find it too appealing. I really liked the rawness of Horn of Plenty and to a certain extent Yellow House, this definitely does not have that.

I've got one friend I can relate to,
and he's in another state right now,
which makes listening to Shields harder,
because we spent summer 2009 geeking over Veckatimest.

But yeah, I completely agree about having their albums grow on you.
Grizzly Bear is often very melancholic and slow,
but between the emotions Grizzly Bear finds a cove of beauty.
Seriously, they have some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
That minor to major change in "Marla" on Yellow House is still one of the most gorgeous minutes of music I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

I cannot comment to Horns of Plenty, as I don't know it that well.
That record was completely recorded by Ed Droste, and him alone.
(The singer on "Yet Again," "Gun Shy," "Knife" etc.)

The rest of the members joined after that,
so, to me personally, Yellow House is Grizzly Bear's first real album.

By the way, I love, LOVE, "Dory."
That creepy change at the end is what does it for me.
"I can't be here all hours."

Definitely not an album everyone can hang with,
but one that deserves a fair, unbiased, listening.

I couldn't agree more!  I love that whole song to pieces.  Yellow House blew me away and I still listen to it alot.  It was my first of theirs too, and the easiest for me to digest.  Of course a song like Two Weeks is as catchy as they get, but I'm speaking of the album as a whole.  When I first skimmed Yellow House I was like 'eh.'  A bit later I threw the album on for the hell of it, without skipping a track.  I probably listened to it twice more that night.  The attention to detail is just inimitable.

As for Horn of Plenty, I knew Droste sang all the songs and the guitar all seemed like his too.  Didn't know it was only him!  I guess that makes alot of sense in regards to his influence in the later albums.

The day it came out some guy posted the full album synced to a documentary about autumn in the arctic.... :aweoverdose: They took it down pretty quickly though

"I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."
