I hate my therapist/psychologist.

So I've been in therapy for 2 years now (It's on of those "Combo" places where you see a therapist and a psychologist for medication management.)
Today my psychologist says I'm stubborn, I do too much internet research, I'm not a doctor, I'm argumentative, I have attendance issues, and him and my therapist get into arguments over me.
What bullshit. I get ass-raped there. I tell them a med doesn't work, and I pretty much get a "Too bad, deal with it." And I protest because they don't work, and now I'm "argumentative."
And as for my attendance issues... I missed TWO days, 1 and a half years ago because of a snow storm. And he throws that in my face today. Wtf?
Looks like I'm on the hunt for a new therapist/psychologist. I can't handle this stress, especially from a place where they are supposed to be helping me, not dragging me down, or belittling me.

Yeah my man.  Fuuuuuck that place.  Your therapist/psychologist should be a trusted, empathetic and kind confidant.  By the sound of your story, you need to ditch that crew post haste.

I too went to a pshycology/therapist combo place, for awhile when I was younger. I didn't like the prick either. Always calling me at random hours, not for anything treatment related, but because my check didn't clear, or something money related. I still had a balance, and I missed a session, he called me, didn't even mention about the session I missed, just money. Eventually I got refferred to a therapist for medication, they wanted to put me on SSRI ( Zoloft maybe?). Well I go back to my pshycologist, and tell him I don't think Zoloft is good for me (I didn't think putting me on one drug, after quitting another drug, opiates, was a smart idea). Well he flipped out, I've never seen him this annoyed and angry. At that point, I tell him "I'm uncomfortable with you as my psychologist, I don't think we need to continue this anymore, in fact, I am going right now." He flipped out even more, saying I was "sick in the head", blah, blah, etc, just about every insult you can give someone.

I think these dr.s just don't like it at all when you disagree with them, and by dammit all, it's your body! This is your right and they should try to work with you to find a solution you agree with. But obviously, he was more concerned about the money, I'm assuming there was a kickback/referral fee he gets for each patient that he can trick into getting medicated.

Screw these guys, psychiatry/therapy is such a pseudo-science, can you really expect that everyone acts in a certain way, for certain textbook reasons? Because no one is different apparetly.

I honestly felt I would have had better results, taking that 130, and getting an escort for the hour instead. At least then, I'll be satisfied. :ooo:

I went commuted to a psychologist in gainesville from jacksonville for several months once per week for $300/hour.  Thankyou insurance!! :grin:  He was a very wise dude.  That's what you should be looking for... not someone who will mindlessly apply some other dude's theory or apply meds without caring if they work or not.  I even talked to him about tripping.  He was boys with Huston Smith and we talked about that too.  He was totally legit.  I miss going to him.

For about every genuine good compassionate healer there's at least ten quacks out to make a buck. Today's snake oil is SSRI's. I'd rather have the snake oil. At least that's good for arthritis and doesn't have horrid withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop taking it

in my case I went to see a thereapist first then a psychologist.  The therepist was the one who reccomended the psychologist.  This is what I suggest you do.  Find a good therepist, and then ask him for a referral to a psychologist.  That way you can feel more comfortable talking with the therepist.  I can talk about all my drug use with my therepsit without worrying about him telling my psych doctor.  I dont tell my psych doctor my drug use beyond cannabis.  But I tell my therepist about my LSD and MDMA use, even tho he does not condone them, he will listen to me.

There is something very valuable I have learned about psychologists, therapists and counsellors. The majority of them are behaviourists, and use CBT (Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy). It's no coincidence most of them are awful, too.

CBT is aimed at turning people into zombies who ignore their problems and the resulting feelings, rather than make any attempt to understand and come to terms with them.

I am seeing a new guy on Tuesday who I have been told uses psychoanalysis of some description. You know, Freud, repressed memories, unresolved issues stemming from childhood etc. I'm not particularly learned in psychology and it's possible this will be bullshit of a different kind, but worth a try.

Ok, when I say aimed, I don't mean that they literally think that way. But that is what my opinion is of it's effects on a person. CBT places all responsibility on an individual without considering factors outside of his/her control, it teaches you to adapt your way of thinking in response to your circumstances rather than try to get to the root of why you got there in the first place. There is nothing in CBT which resolves long-term depression and insecurities because it fails to look at a person as the sum of their history and memories, rather than just their present circumstance.

This is my evaluation of it based on my experience with multiple professionals. If you have an criticisms I'll be happy to respond tomorrow, I need to get some sleep now though.

EDIT: Care to offer your reasons why my choice of psychoanalysis is foolish, All we Perceive? I did say that it could be just as ineffective as CBT. But I need to experience it first hand before making judgements about it.

really? A zombie? That is like so dramatic--CBT is actually intended to make you more introspective, not less--i.e. understand and probe the cognitive distortions we are all prone to. Do i catastrophize? Slip into a black/white false dichotomy mode--you should be familiar with the concepts. If you're not getting this, it aint CBT. it is used because it works and works within a reasonable time frame--weeks to months, not years to decades as is the case for psychoanalysis. Good luck with that. I know what a painful, convulted road that can be as my ex was one.

Freudian psychology is, imo, quack psychology more or less valuable solely as historical anecdote which is why it's far from the dominant theory used in practice.  The whole thing is based solely on an overly simplistic model of the human psyche (id, ego, superego) combined with a bizarre infatuation with your relationship with your mother.  The idea behind behavioral therapy is that it doesn't care what the "sources" of your depression/insecurities come from; if you fix your bad behaviors which flow from these insecurities, you will fix the insecurities themselves.  Just because BT doesn't overtly get at the root of the problem doesn't mean it doesn't ultimately affect the root of the problem in a positive way.  CBT is an evolution of BT in that it combines behavioral principles as well as why you think a certain way and tries to shape your behaviors AND your thoughts into a more positive direction.  I don't see how that makes one a zombie.

For example, let's imagine you think you are ugly.  Behavioral therapy might encourage you to do things which show you that you aren't ugly--like getting positive responses from the opposite sex whereas cognitive therapy would focus on pinpointing when you feel ugly or think you're ugly and ascertaining where those thoughts came from.  When combined, as you can see, it becomes pretty powerful stuff.

I've read over 700 pages of Freud's papers...everyone takes psych 101 in college and assumes they know everything about the guy

true. there are good therapists out there. find one you can identify with, and never let them force you to take a med, thats bullshit.

I work in a home where clients take meds they sometimes dont want to, and even though were not supposed to say so, I always tell the clients, if you dont want to take meds, it is your right to refuse them.
