Affordability of psychologists?
    #5702784 - 06/02/06 02:42 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I have good reason to beleive that I might benefit greatly from getting some psychological therapy, but I'm unsure if I would be able to afford it.

Is it common for insurance plans to cover psychological therapy?

I don't have any sort of definite disorder, but I do have a lot of very detrimental issues that I could benefit from treatment for.

I've got two insurance plans. one is a PPO and the other an HMO.

Yeah, it should cover it but then you make yourself available to be scrutinized forever by insurers, employers, creditors, etc. Fork up the cash and keep the record private if you can afford it. JMHO.

The guy I've seen is $120/hr. Blue cross insurance would cover up to $60 a session and and a max of $300 or $500 a year. The rest was tax deductible.

If you really need to talk to someone, you can get a temporary therapist (for a three month period) through a company.  I use Lifeworks.  They are mostly crises counselors, and the company drops you after three months.  I pay 18 dollars a session, and have enjoyed my therapists.  (one got laid off, one talks to angels  )

Lifeworks is going to drop me in a few weeks.  It sucks because I'll have to move to private practice.  I don't know if my insurance will cover any substantial therapy either, and that really sucks, because when I don't have a person at ground control, things can get hairy.

Anyway, a temp. counselor might be the way to go at first, because they are generally cheap but still avid professionals.  Just be prepared to be booted after a little while.  :frown:

I think I'll ask if my college offers any sort of counseling service. That may be a good option in the short run.

That's a good idea...you may just have to look in the phone book and look around for a low-cost agency that supplies counseling. Or see if there is a "Lifeworks" near you.
