This may elucidate that either language needs improvement, or its users need additional and more complex teachings in language. :shrug:

What it elucidates is that most people lack critical thinking skills.

NPR had a segment on this a few days ago

There's a famous test in experimental psychology that goes like this. There are five people tied to one set of train tracks, and a single person tied to another. A train is coming and will run over and kill the five people, leaving the other person on the other track unharmed.

You have the option of pushing a button that will change the track and make the train divert and kill the one guy, sparing the five that would have died if you didn't push the button.

Would you push the button? Almost everyone says yes. They don't want to kill anyone, but better one person die than five.

So far so good.

Now the moral dilemma is changed slightly.

You're standing on a bridge next to someone. You see below you the same track configuration as before only this time, there is no button. To save the five, you have to push the person next to you off the bridge and onto the track, thus killing him but also derailing the train and saving the five other people. Would you push one person off the bridge to their death to save the five?

Here, most people say no. There's no different in the two problems. They're functionally identical: kill one to save five. But the second form of the problem illicit an emotional decision instead of a rational one, and most people allow the five to die.

This was paralleled during the national health care debates when the proponents added a provision into the bill to allow physician-assisted suicide. The opposition re-branded that as Death Panel what would kill granny when she got to expensive to keep alive.

Americans, evolution-rejecting religious morons incapable of critical thought that they are, believed it EVEN THOUGH most Americans favor doctor-assisted suicide.
