amazonians and creepers! *completed*
    #1557621 - 05/18/03 10:46 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

2 new projects just started to bear fruit - here are some amazonians and some creepers that were spawned from wbs into straight horsepoo (  >using knotty's collection tek< and  >roadkill's preparation tek< ) on 18 April. all was fine, and they was fully colonised 6 days later.

then i had a setback, and learned some valuable lessons - my casing layer (1 inch of sterilised coir/verm/peat/chalk/oyster on 5 inches substrate as usual) refused to colonise. not even a wisp after 8 days. :frown:

so i got some expert advice (thanks 6T and anno!) and decided that either the casing was too wet, or that i had somehow 'shocked' them by trying to colonise the casing in different conditions: i'd put them in the 84F incubator, you see, whiereas they had colonised the bulk at about 72F. so i scraped off the casings, lightly scratched the surfaces, and sprayed with dilute peroxide to bash anything i may have inadvertently introduced. then left them to incubate some more.

luckily they both whitened up again, and were eventually birthed (no casing) on 7th and 9th May. 8 days later, they pinned, and here they are a couple of days after that:

here are the amazonians -  and the creepers
both are pinning mostly at the edges, as you see. i suspect that's cos they're a little dry with no casing layers. a slight bluish tinge on the surface backs this up. i'll case after the first flush.

you live and learn

p.s. hoping to get these harvested and cased before a two-week trip to Peru on saturday!

Glad to here the day was saved.

Do you use a pH testing method (strips or meter) on casing material, before application?

I only ask because any casing mixture that contains peat requires some pH adjustment. To add arbitrary amounts of hydrated lime, ground limestone, etc is only a guestimate of the resulting pH, rather than knowing what it is.

A pH meter can be had at most garden stores for a few dollars & is a wise investment, If you want the proper pH - rather than a guestimate. As guestimates can be wildly wrong.

Some update pics:
Amazonians 1st flush fan-drying ...& Creepers maturing ....

edit: next morning update: . .
eric stuck his penis into that last pic, i couldn't stop him !

Tonight i'm making up a batch of casing material- 5 coir: 5 verm : 5 peat : 1 CaCo3 : 1 oyster shell, watered to around 70% capacity and ph tested to 7.5, then pasteurised in the microwave (5 mins, mix, 5 mins, mix, 5 mins, mix) and cooled.

This casing will be applied to the bald horsepoo surface of both tubs (ph retest first), then placed straight into the terrarium (cos i'll be away a fortnight). second flush will hopefully be about pickable when i return.

Oh, and my malabars (on straight straw) are pinning (x 10) for their ... fourth flush! never thought i'd say those words!

Nice Shirley!

I had Malabars that went 4 flushes on straw also (last flush was 2 mushrooms). I love the Malabars, one of my favorites.

amazons 3rd flush [Re: Joshua]
    #1679255 - 07/02/03 04:42 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Amazons 3rd flush (busted computer meant i missed lots of 2nd flush harvest shots; the creepers were magnificent):

only two fruits, and I?d been away from home for a couple of days, so was unable to prevent a spore-spray - check out the perlite: that?s not a light shadow, but a spore print on the floor!

Pulled them both up, and was pleased to see that the older sister had another 5 inches below the surface level, growing along the side of the tub.

Younger sister 29g wet, older sister 76g wet. That?s another 9g dry, dinner for two!

Don't you just love the Amazons! My favorite strain by far. They grow huge, and are consistant as hell. Very agressive.
