Robert Browning.

"Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" (edited for length, you can find the full poem online)

I.
My first thought was, he lied in every word,
That hoary cripple, with malicious eye
Askance to watch the workings of his lie
On mine, and mouth scarce able to afford
Suppression of the glee, that pursed and scored
Its edge, at one more victim gained thereby.

II.
What else should he be set for, with his staff?
What, save to waylay with his lies, ensnare
All travellers who might find him posted there,
And ask the road? I guessed what skull-like laugh
Would break, what crutch ’gin write my epitaph
For pastime in the dusty thoroughfare.

III.
If at his counsel I should turn aside
Into that ominous tract which, all agree,
Hides the Dark Tower. Yet acquiescingly
I did turn as he pointed, neither pride
Now hope rekindling at the end descried,
So much as gladness that some end might be.

IV.
For, what with my whole world-wide wandering,
What with my search drawn out through years, my hope
Dwindled into a ghost not fit to cope
With that obstreperous joy success would bring,
I hardly tried now to rebuke the spring
My heart made, finding failure in its scope.

V.
As when a sick man very near to death
Seems dead indeed, and feels begin and end
The tears and takes the farewell of each friend,
And hears one bit the other go, draw breath
Freelier outside, (‘since all is o’er,’ he saith
And the blow fallen no grieving can amend;’)

not really sure he is considered a poet, but I enjoy Kahlil Gibran.....

Im just being a drunk. Bukowski isn't the only one. Kerouac is good, I recommend "On the Road" though it isn't exactly poetry. it is his most well known.

Most poetry is an acquired taste, I find. Try these guys reading their shit:




It's very straightforward and needs no analysis. Just listen to it like you'd listen to music, feel the images when they come.

William Wordsworth.

Baudelaire, Blake, Browning and Whitman are all great too.

The idea of the Romantic sublimity really oozes out of Wordsworth and a lot of the other Romantics missed it.

Blake was pretty 'far out' but Wordsworth poems have made me cry before.

They're just so damn beautiful.

Actually if you have a Kindle, you can get Wordsworth's "Poems in Two Volumes" parts I and II.

The Prelude is a pretty good piece, his collected poems are really the best, and the Excursion is the "advanced placement Wordsworth", if you will.

I wish he finished the Recluse project, but I suppose in one way, he truly did.

If anyone understands what I'm talking about shoot me a :pm:.

There's a lot of despondency and the Romantic fragmentation of the self in a Hegelian mode... only really came in his later years when the era was dying; Wordsworth's earlier works are absolutely astounding.

"Intimations of Immortality", "We Are Seven", "Solitary Reaper".

"Salisbury Plain"...


The thoughts which bow the kindly spirits down
And break the springs of joy, their deadly
Weight Derives from memory of pleasures flown
Which haunts us in some sad reverse fate,
Of those who on the couch of Affluence rest
