I was just skimming some pages of the internet and came across a Bolivian Torch Cactus growing kit,

Plant-pod (mini greenhouse)
Plant pot.
15 Bolivian torch seeds,
Our special blend cactus seedling compost.
Anti-fungal mix for damping off.

This was £7.99? Is that far too little a price for something like this and likely to be a scam?

try typing the name of the site plus review into google and see if others have been ripped off by them. I think i read somewhere on here that bolivian torch is a synonym for bridgesii...? See if they have the genus Trichocereus in the description, any plant vendor should know the botanical name and not just the common. Dont post the link here as its against the rules of the E.G. to post non vendor links though.

Yeah they got the scientific name of the species and all that, they also got 3-5 inches of cacti you can buy for 6 quid i've never had anything to do with bolivian torch so i really dunno prices and stuff

Seems like a reasonable price. Ebay is decent for purchasing little starters because you can see hundreds of reviews instantly. It's rather obvious who is doing it correctly :wink:

personally i wouldn't buy a seed kit i would spend the money on more seeds, make my own soil and research how to grow cacti, but if they have a decent soil and instructions you could give it a try, i pay 10$ US for 1000 bridgesii seeds which is about 6.5 british pounds so i dont think its unreasonable price-wise (for a kit) but theres a good chance they will send you a soil mixture thats no good. If your really interested in growing cacti there are a lot of threads on here that will help

Yeah, it's a scam, 8 quid is much too much. You can buy ~50 seeds for a quid, some kind of peat/sand soil you can get anywhere, and you need a plastic cup and a piece of clingfilm. And that's it. I suggest you buy a Pereskiopsis cutting or two, because it will speed up your seedling's growth at least 10 times.
BTW, yeah, Bolivian torch is a common name for Trichocereus bridgesii.

Is it worth growing bolivian then? I read its more potent (higher mescaline content) than other i.e. peruvian torch, san pedro

It's all relative. It is said that bridgesii has some other chemicals that make the trip more enjoyable, but T. pachanoi (but only certain cultivars) usually have more M. You have to understand that it will take about 5 years for a cactus to mature and be ready for consumption (without using Pereskiopsis). All Trichocereus species are a good choice, but for me, brifgesii looks the best and that's why I'd choose it.
