shaving questions

So I just shaved my face for the first time with one of those disposable blue things. I used some basic cream and hot water to rinse the blade and my face. I already like this more than my piece o' shit electric and am going to stick with this method from now on. Just a couple questions though so I don't get cuts, ingrown hairs, irritation/rash, etc...


Against or with the grain? Both? Sideways? I always went against with an electric but this time I went with the grain to be safe. I went sideways in some areas like my cheeks, but around and under my chin (between your chin and neck) it feels like I did a shitty job. Am I supposed to tilt my head back go totally backwards (towards the sky) there and along my jawline (where I tend to get minor acne)? Or do I just press down harder and stay with the grain?

Should I use aftershave or just rinse? Or should I wash my face with dove soap? Should I wash/rinse beforehand?

How many times can I use the blue razors before I'm supposed to throw em out?

This first time took me about 10-15 minutes will I eventually get faster? Haha

Please share your tips or techniques and also recommend good cheap products

Going against the grain.. (weird way of putting it) will get a slightly closer shave. I have never used after shave, or soap, just water or a shower. Disposable razors for me (depends on your facial hairs diameter) will last about 2 shaves then gets painful and the blade begins to rust. I think you can get down to 5 mins eventually. I'd reccomend an electric shaver any day compared to what you're using.

disposables suck. cut against the grain. aftershave is awesome for razor burn or irritaion especially after using a worn out disposable. i simply use hot water to open the pores for a closer shave and some soap.:rockon: i also noticed if u let it grow a bit b4 ur next shave u will have a clean ass, smooth as fuck shave. but thats just me. ive never felt or shaved another mans face.:shrug:

I use shaving oil (Wal mart should have some or make your own) and a double blide razor..look at the old kind much better and cheaper the one time use...I use Merkur razor..try using a deodorant stone after to close up pour and really make a smooth shave

Like everyone says, against the grain gets a closer shave. But it also causes more irritation.  You should just try it out and see how it does you after a couple of days.  If you've got curly beard hair, especially if you're African-American, I would advise you to not as those hairs become ingrown much easier.

Aftershave is only necessary if you experience acne from shaving - it helps keeps your pores clean, open and not clogged up.  I can get away without even shaving cream for some reason, even though I have a pretty thick beard.

Washing your face with soap dries out the skin and makes irritation more likely.  Don't do that.

No real reason to wash beforehand, though you should at least splash some water as a dry shave irritates almost everyone's skin.

You can use them for as long as they cut.  Mine last a few weeks if I shave on a daily basis, and a single shave if I grow my beard out and then chop it off in a single go.  Keeping them dry helps them last longer.

Eventually you stop caring if your face is perfectly smooth and you'll be done shaving in 2-3 minutes.

Don't be discouraged if it's a complete and utter waste of time. I'm not trying to say don't try, but for example..

I need to shave down on my cheeks, at an angle under my jaw, straight up right under my chin, then like a weird fuckin arc from almost the bottom of my ear to the straight neck/chin line, then a weird swirl type for the rest of my neck.

Before I started sporting a full beard I'd just use an electric razor and keep the "day after shaving" look going.

Skin was too sensitive and my pores too complicated to get a successful shave in without getting ingrown hairs or causing clogged pores.

I loved a clean shave, a tight haircut, nearly hairless manscaping etc but after going through all the products and razors over the years I just said fuck it.

Keeps me cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Also, protip: Shave with boxers on. I once slipped and dropped a razor right on my johnson. Thankfully it didn't shave any skin off and just left a slit (no pun) but jesus christ thinking of it makes my knees weak.
