Perlite

When is it good to change the perlite in the terrarium? Is there signs to look for or just a time period?

it would have a skunky unpleasant kinda smell.... you'd notice it. As for a time limit i dont really know, but for me its about a month or so i think.

Once a week should be more than enough assuming you have a clean working area. More often if odors are noticed.

Perlite is reusable. Just rinse with water and h2o2. Spread well over a baking pan and bake until dry.

30 minutes at 300 degrees is usually enough time.

Once a week.... every other week! You guys have got to be kidding.

IM(yet again drunk and possibly confused)HO perlite is good for at least two more likely even three months! (perhaps I'm just very lazy AND very lucky?!?!)

However, if you don't have a job or a life apart from mushrooms, why not change/clean it every month!?!?! It's your life to waste!

I would suggest you make sure the water is topped up enough once a week, but mine requires only a little water every month to keep the humidity up.

I've also been able to use mine for quite a while... maybe not three months but at least one. I never had a problem with contams. What I do is, I keep the perlite in a separate container right next to the fruiting container and I spray it with lysol about once every week or two, I think it helps keeping contams out of the terrarium.

I keep mine for two months on average. when it starts to dry up I just spray with diluted H202. (higher concentration specifically for the perlite).

Perlite maintenance can exceed one week. One week is my preference because it serves the purpose of reminding me to inspect my growing area.

I can't even remember the last time I changed the perlite in one of my terraniums.. it's quite possibly 2 years old (yes, years) and has maybe been sterilised in the oven 3 or 4 times over that time, and has never had peroxide water used on it.. just plain boiled water.
I guess I must have been very lucky so far not to have it going manky
