transformer output question
    #1666028 -

i have a transformer that has an input rating of 220vac, 50hz, 1.2amp max and the output is 15kv, 20khz, 20 ma.

if i wired this to plug into a 120v wall socket, what would that do to the output characteristics?

It will drop the output voltage by about half, if I remember my physics. I assume this is a neon sign transformer? If nobody else gets back to you, I will check my books when I get home. Be careful, 20ma at these voltages is lethal. Work with a friend watching that knows to pull the plug, rather than touch you, when you mess up. (I have zapped myself more times that I like to admit while building high voltage power supplies)

thanks for the reply.
i suspected it would cut the voltage almost in half, but will it also affect the hz and the 20ma rating?

Mind if I ask what you're building?  :smirk:

I've got a transformer from a microwave here that I'm trying to find some use for.

i want to build an all-purpose, adjustable power source. i will probably eventually use it for a tesla coil. first, i want to make a jacob's ladder with it. i wanted to do this a while back, but i had a bad transformer then. i'm pretty sure this one works, but i won't know for sure until i wire it up and plug it in.
