Time Perception Implant

Most people are pretty aware of a subjective sense of time. Sometimes time seems to be moving quickly during things we enjoy, and slowly during things we loathe. Also, if you've ever taken the right droogz, you know that subjective time passage can swing between these two extremes somewhat randomly.

I don't really know what part of the brain controls our perception of time, but what if there was some kind of implant that could regulate it? So, whenever you were doing something you greatly enjoyed you could slow your perception down automatically. And, when you're doing something boring or painful, time could be sped up. The device could be taken to extremes: an orgasm could be made to seemingly last hours, while a long road trip could seem to last just minutes.

I think such an implant could greatly improve our perceived quality of life. Assuming the implant is safe, and doesn't interfere with any other neurological processes, would you get such an implant? What boring/fun/neutral situations would you use it on?

The difference being that he could control his surroundings, but his own mind and his own perception still operating at the same speed. Also, an implant (assuming we know what part of the brain determines our perception of time) is much more scientifically viable.

He couldn't have gone on a rollercoaster and changed his OWN perception to make the fun drop seem to last for hours, all he would have been able to do was slow down the car itself and everyone in it.

I was thinking the same thing. And it doesn't matter if its reality or perception. If you didn't have to put up with bad things the good things wouldn't seem as good. Like vacations wouldn't be nearly as rewarding if your job seemed to take days over a period of months. Sounds like a good way to waste your life

Today seemed to be a really slow day its all about activity.When our brain lacks stimulation in activities i belive times seems much slower but if youre having fun and never want it to be over it usually feels like everything went by fast.That being said we cant regulate it but if we could that would be freaking awesome id set my brain to time going by slowly then have sex for hours

Relativism, then? You're saying that you can't appreciate fun without work.

I think instead your life would just become one big spectrum of fun, some things more fun and some things less fun, so you would still appreciate some highs and lows.

However, pain/suffering would be all but eliminated, as it would be shortened to very perceptively brief periods.

I think we are kind of cheated as it is because our brains do the opposite: bad things take forever while good things seem to end right away. If we could reverse this, just imagine all the activities that you love doing seeming to last dozens or even hundreds of times longer.

I flip a switch, jump off a plane and I experience free fall for what feels like hours...I flip another switch, and my boring 8 hour job seems to pass in 10 minutes. To me it would be paradise, a life made of nothing but enjoyment. Would it get boring? No, because not everything you do is going to cause the same level of enjoyment, it would be on a sliding scale. The change from activity to activity would keep your excitement and appreciation of life high and thrilling.

Just take smoking weed. When you do it all the time, sure your life is a hazy blur of physical pleasure, but after a while you just can't get as high as you used to. I bet if I smoked a joint now I would be in fucking space (haven't smoked in about 3 months). And its not just chemical dependence, your entire idea of what being really high is like changes.

People that have sex all the time have super high standards for sex, they want more and more and it has to be better and better to satisfy them. People that rarely have sex are happy if the person is clean and somewhat attractive and they have an orgasm. If there was a world where your pleasures were like that eventually people would stop enjoying small things entirely. That feeling you get when you drink a cold drink on a hot day. The sound of rain on the roof on a boring sunday. The little thrill you get when you see a glimpse of a beautiful woman. Just like in the movie Click (although I admit it was a terrible movie it makes good points about life) you would just start glassing over anything remotely unpleasant.

The fast/slow perception of time died in my brain after working years in retail.  Something about working 8 hours a day doing something you loathe seems to even out your perception of time.  At any point in the day I could guess what time it was within +/- 10 minutes and since then, things I enjoy seem to happen just as quickly/slowly as things I hate.  No idea why.

so you can just take uppers when you are doing something you don't enjoy, and take psychedelics when you are doing something you enjoy (thats what i do, no need for an implant)

We already have drugs for this OP.

Couple weeks ago I was on a longish 10 hour car trip, not driving, so I closed my eyes and meditated, just some breathing and some hong-sau. Had some mad psychedelic visuals. It only seemed to last 10-20 minutes and BAM, 10 hours fucking gone.

Seems to me like this can be trained, master yoda style, without the need for some crazy, mind control chip :tinfoil:

I thought of this idea last night when I was pretty high on ambien...I'm pretty sober now, though. :lol:

I would agree that using drugs or meditation could work as well, but it would be difficult to apply those to short, acute pleasurable experiences, like making an orgasm seem to last for an hour or making free-fall seem to last for several hours.

I would like to learn how to train myself to be able to meditate, see a bunch of psychedelic visuals naturally, and have time pass extremely quickly, though. :yesnod:
