Vivariums and Aquascapes
    #16637812 -

Is anyone into this? I found a terrarium shop down the street, and I had no clue how awesome of a hobby it is! These two videos have inspired me!

Anyone have something like this to share with us? Tips and pointers? Seems like the kind of hobby a mushroom enthusiast could really enjoy.

See you back in a few weeks
I want to do one of these really badly, but not until I'm in a more permanent living situation (AKA, not renting)

I caught a fence lizard and my cat brought me an anole back in october,  about
a month later I decided to use some of my scrap glass to build a vivarium,
16"x48"x48", the bottom 12" is filled with dirt and live plants, the plants
thrive, my kids are thrilled with it and I've discovered the crickets were
laying eggs so there's hundreds of little crickets from time to time

Thanks for the link. I am so stoked for this. I am certainly going to get into this hobby. Right now I am just trying to decide if I want to build my own tank, buy one, or use an ordinary aquarium for the sake of learning. But seems like if I am going to go through the effort of growing plants like that I would want to go big right off the bat.

Have you ever had a regular aquarium?  I'd highly advise getting an aquarium without live plants your first go-round, and focus on learning how to set up and care for it, as well as the fish.  I'm not going to lie and say that it's difficult once the aquarium is functioning for a while, but you'll still need to clean it and whatnot from time to time.    That'll also give you a good idea of what you want in your aquascape.  Live plants add a whole new set of problems to the mix, you'll be doing a fuckload more maintenance and care since you're creating a fully living ecosystem.

I've had a few aquariums but never really an avid hobbyist, I set this on up, started the plants from bulbs and never really had any issue

the pots were nymphaea caerulea, notoriously difficult to germinate, still
havent managed and I still cant find a valid source for the rhyzomes

Well I did have an experience with a fish tank some years back in the 90's before the internet was as popular. It was a disaster until I learned about the biological cycles and whatnot from the first knowledgeable pet store employee I found. I spent quite a bit on filters trying to figure out why the water looked like shit before that. But artificial looking aquariums don't interest me at all now that I have grown up, This has re-sparked the excitement of keeping fish and reptiles for me. The plants are what excite me about this more so than the animals. Especially the moss, I fucking love moss!

Well like with live plants you get more algae and you need to make sure the plants are getting everything they need, as well as trimming, pruning, etc.  Compare that to feeding the fish, cleaning it once in a while, and that's pretty much it in a regular aquarium.  At least, that's my understanding.  I never had live plants.

I think it would be worth the effort. However the Vivariums are just as fascinating, they seem like they might be less time consuming than the aquascape. But at the same time I really don't know. But I do know that the shop I went to had little white mushrooms growing in a terrarium with his dart frogs. It would be awesome if we could grow bio luminescent mushrooms in a vivarium.
