mushrooms and migraines
    #16523420 -

anyone have personal beneficial experience?  i know someone who suffers from migraines often and has run out of options, save for mushrooms.  brought it up with them but he isn't very fond of the idea of tripping.  would a low dosage work or would he *have* to do a substantial amount?

Make sure he hydrates well before and during.  I keep forgetting to drink enough water and the mushrooms actually give me a 24-48 hour headache (hydrating after the headache starts doesn't seem to help).

sign up and post, people will help you

i my self suffer from chronic cluster headache, totally different beast than what you have, but mushrooms have been the best medicine i have ever found, i have been on close to 20 different meds for my headaches, all suck and just give horrendus side effects

the website i posted there is full of people like you and me and whom use mushrooms to get their life back in order

likely a small dose of 1.5g of dried cubensis will make a drastic change in your headache activity and will likely abort any attack in progress, i have even aborted my attacks with .5g

some people can dose 2 times a year and be headache free completely

there are some rules and other things you should know, you cant be taking any other triptans like imitrex or antidepressants they interfere witheach other and may cause extreme problems, a typical 5 day detox is necessary before trying the fungus

LSD works just as well if not better for some people

if you have any questions i can do my best to help you, i can damn near guarantee it wil be the new medicine of choice for battling your headaches, and the doses are low enough not to put you in space, its more like a mild stoning effect

heres a video you may find helpful, its solely about clusterheadaches, but people with migraines find just as good if not better results

Above poster said everything I was going to.  I knew a man who hated the experience, but dosed 2gs about once every other month and cluster headaches disappeared.  I put it in capsules for him, never charged for my help.  Now he has his own supply for life . He is like Mr. Suburbian... You'd never know, it cured him though....

It works a treat for my wife.  She had suffered decades of migraine misery before discovering the psilocybin cure 2 years ago.

Now she takes half a gram of semilanceata once a week and is free from headache.  The mushroom remedy also eliminates her food allergies to some extent too (all animal fat is off the menu because it aggravates the 'vascular headache' she suffers) and now she can EAT, the last 2 years have been magic  and simply going out to a restaurant is a dream come true for us.

I aught to add that the thing thats kept her going all those years 'before psilocybin' was the drug 'Pizotifen', after all treatments and investigation, including a brain scan, this drug was the only thing that helped, and she still takes a double daily prescription dose of it.  But its only psilocybin that gives the very powerful, emergency effect, of killing a headache STONE-DEAD just 15 mins after dosing, and of course, taking the half gram  maintenance dose weekly, stops them coming in the first place.

Persuade your friend to try it OP. its a life changer

so you don't need a large dose, it can be minimal?  he's really afraid of the tripping bit which would just make a worse experience if he DID have an intense trip.

also best time to do it is probably night right?  day is done, no interruptions, and shortly after the trip wears off you get a good sleep in.

yes a small dose can be effective, about 1.5 grams of dried cubensis, its a level 2 at best, maybe a level 3 if sensitive to psilocybin.
Even .5g has aborted attacks for me and many others
MAKE SURE that he has not been taking any other triptans/tryptamines/psychadelics for at least 5 days before dosing
i would do it in the afternoon, so the trip doesn't mess with his sleep patterns.

if he is that scared of a few grams of mushrooms, LSA is an option.
50 RC seeds (rivea corymbosa) have worked wonders on people, very mild "trip" very short experience, IME they lasted about 30 mins and then i feel asleep, colors were bright at best

I highly suggest he gets on the computer and heads over to cluster busters message board and starts talking to people that are experienced in treating their headaches with psychadelics.

Your at a "mushroom site", not a "treat headaches with mushrooms site" Go to www.clusterbusters.com Please!

I use psilocybe cubensis all the time to abort my frequent migraines. I used shrooms last night for this reason.

I'd suggest trying Sumatriptan first if your friend hasn't already tried it. You can get it over the counter in some countries but in others you might need to ask a doctor for a prescription. It's in the same class of drugs as psilocybin but it does not make you hallucinate so you can get on with your day without being high. I used it twice and it got rid of my migraine but I am allergic to it so I had to turn to mushrooms.

Regarding dosage, I dry my mushrooms and put them in capsules. It makes it easier to take, store and carry. I use size 000 capsules. Each 000 capsule usually has at least 0.8 grams of mushroom powder although it will usually contain closer to 0.9 grams or 1.0 grams. I take two when I get a migraine. I have gotten away with taking one capsule before but I usually take a little more to be on the safe side because if you don't abort it with tryptamines properly the first time then you will have to wait another day until you can try again. You can find information about this on the info sheets that come with Sumatriptan.

Your friend also might be surprised to know that caffeine can be used to abort a migraine. It works even better when mixed with aspirin. For some people I know a strong coffee is all they need. You will also find that caffeine is added to medications because it can make drugs work faster as well as make them more affective. Cafergot and Excedrin migraine are examples. It does not work all the time for me though. It is my first line of defence but if it fails then I will use mushrooms.

Do you notice a drop in frequency of your headaches and or lesser intensity after using mushrooms during the days following your dose?

Only thing bad about sumatriptan is rebound headaches, but that is mostly in the injectable form (IME)
The tablets not so much, but they can take awhile to "kick in"

On the topic of mixing anti depressants and other serotonin agonists such as Psilocybin, Sumatriptan or even MDMA, the risk of an adverse reaction appears to be very low. The worry is that one will suffer from serotonin syndrome, however, if you look up cases of death from serotonin syndrome then you will find that it is extremely rare. The thing with side effects is that if the tiniest number or percentage experiences *insert symptom here* then it gets listed.

I was prescribed a couple of different anti depressants as a migraine prophylaxis treatment and I took various serotonin agonists at the same time. This included LSD and I also took a lot of psilocybin to abort my migraines with. I suffered no ill side effects. The only thing that I, and others whom I know in the same situation, experienced is a reduced ability to get high.

Not only that, Psilocybin/LSD/LSA have the tendancy to stop or minimize attacks for respectable amounts of time after the dose...weeks...sometimes months.

The idea of not having any other triptans/serotonin medications in your system goes along the lines of tolerance. Since most meds only treat the one attack, and people find lasting relief from hallucinogens, it's best to have the lowest tolerance before dosing.

migraineur - Do you notice less attacks, and or less intense attacks the days following your mushroom dose? Or does it only help the attack your treating?

No, I do not get a drop in frequency. It is an abortive medication only. However, it does improve my quality of life dramatically. Instead of being in pain for as long as 3 days and being bedridden, sensitive to light, sound, smells etc, I am high for 4 hours and then I'm back to normal.

From what I've read and heard about cluster headaches it appears that psychedelic drugs can be used to prevent as well as abort cluster headache, even in very low doses. I wish this were the case for me as I'm sick of having to get high so often. It beats the alternative though and without shrooms I would have killed myself as the constant pain was too much.

Since psilocybin is also a tryptamine then I'd say it has the potential to cause rebound headaches. There are numerous medications that can cause rebound headaches though. The trigger for my migraines is changes in weather which sucks because if my trigger was chocolate or something then I could cut it out of my diet. I can't control the weather unless I become a bubble boy and live in a hyperbaric chamber. My sister and I often get migraines on the same day or a day apart. I know others who also get weather migraines but I seem to have worse than everyone else. Some people whom I know who have fibromyalgia are also affected by the same kind of weather that triggers migraines.

Regarding the time taken for Sumatriptan tablets to kick in, mushrooms and mushroom capsules can be the same. When I have the opportunity I will take the cap off the capsules when taking them so that my migraine is aborted faster. A study I came across earlier in the year used pure psilocybin injections which apparently only lasts 30 minutes and also acts quickly. I wish I had access to the injectable form because then I could get back on with my day a whole lot quicker.

I've had many times when I've used mushrooms multiple times a week, sometimes the following day or maybe a couple days apart. A one day break, in my experience, allows me the chance to abort a new migraine should it occur so quickly. I experience tolerance a lot. If I wanted to take them all the time for fun then I'd have a problem due to a reduced ability to experience the high, however, the tolerance and reduced high do not inhibit my ability to abort a migraine provided I have a break of a day or more.

On another note, if any of you are interested then I can provide the details of some studies that found dexamphetamine and methyphenidate to be useful prophylaxis treatments for migraine and cluster headaches.

Hi guys, another migraine sufferer here, Though my migraines are not frequent (maybe 3 or 4 times a year) when i do get them they are abosulutely horrendous. I have not tried sumatriptan yet however i tried most OTC migraine meds which contain a mix of caffeine, aspirin and sometimes ergotamine. Ive also had intraveinous ergotamine in the hospital. I have found none of these treatments to be effective for me, enduring hours of excruciating pain. Last night i experienced my usual warning symptoms, the horrible zig zagging lights across my vision, i immediately took about .9grams of dry cubensis and went to lay down in the dark. The head ache never came, which is a miracle for me. However i must say that for about 4 hours the 'aura' or the flashing zig ziggy lights came and went. So although i was able to avoid the headache its self its not a magic cure that would allow me to go and drive a car safely or continue a days work. But by far it has offered me the most releif out of anything ive tried.

I bet if you had taken a 2 gram dose, all those nasty migraine zig-zag visuals would have changed to beautiful intricate persian rug designs.  I bet if you take 1 gram each week as a maintenance dose, migraine will never get you again.

I tried the maintenance/preventative dose but it doesn't work. It works as an abortive, not a preventative. The same goes for other drugs in this class such as sumatriptan and ergotamine. You take it only when you need it. The only exception that I know of is methysergide which is used as a preventative. However, it can have horrible side effects which can result in organ failure. This is in regards with migraine. People who suffer from cluster headaches, on the other hand, say that psychedelics can work as an abortive and preventative. I wish this were the case for migraines.

Also, I end up taking about 2 grams when I take shrooms to abort a migraine. If you don't take enough to abort it properly the first time then you can't just take more on the spot. You have to do it properly the first time otherwise you have to wait a day or so because you can try again.

Yep migraineur, I read about methysergide and how after a few months using the medication 'you start to die'.

My wife takes a double daily dose of 'prescription' pizotifen, and has done for decades, it works like a preventative and its made life tolerable for her all those years.  Nevertheless I can still vouch for the huge amount of suffering thats taken place and even with the aid of this pizotifen drug.

The last few years wife's been supplementing her pizotifen medication with a weekly dose of mushroom tea and its worked like magic for her.  Where do you live migraineur ? I'm in UK and pizotifen is a standard medication for migraine here, maybe if you can get it where you are it could work as effectively 'in combo' with the psilocybin as it does for my Mrs.

Thats interesting where you say taking a sufficient dose is crucial.  My Mrs is always trying to cut it to the minimum (and not a bad thing too, as we have limited supplies) I'm always trying to encourage her to simply take enough to get rid of the headaches, but she dislikes all the psycadelic effects coming with a bigger dose.  With wife the migraine complaint is connected to dietary allergies i.e dairy is off the menu, no cheese or chocolate or to much animal fat of any kind.  Of course shes overdone it this christmas and has had to take an extra and bigger mid week dose of mushrooms to get back to equilibrium.

I used to suffer migraines all through my teen years.  I didn't know or hear of the medicinal effects it has on them until a few years after I first consumed.  But i haven't had one since then.  I might of had one or two after my first couple doses but I think i learned of a way to meditate the migraine away when they would start to happen.  But after dosing it was not as bad as before my first dose.  I haven't had a full blown one in well over five probably closer to ten years
