bypassing firewalls
    #1656363 - 06/23/03 04:38 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I recently moved into a new office and the firewall put up here prevents me from connecting to WinMX, Direct connect and all the other file sharing/Peer 2 Peer connectings. I was wonding what i can do to get around this, or what programs someone else is using that would allow me to download from those P2P connections. Also if there are any sites i should go to to learn more about this kind of thing.
thanks

Add a firewall entry for WinMX for TCP port 6699 and UDP port 6257.

If you don't have access to the firewall configuration program, you can download a program called SocksToHTTP, which will tunnel WinMX through the firewall. After installation, WinMX must be set up as follows :

1. Settings>Internet Connection>Outgoing TCP Connections, select Use SOCKS5 Proxy, and enter localhost in Address.

2. . Settings>Internet Connection>Incoming TCP Connections, select Unable to accept incoming TCP connections.

3. Settings>Internet Connection>In/Out UDP Packets, select Unable to send or receive USP datagrams on any port.

Man I wish every workplace did that. All that file sharing P2P crap slows a connection down so much. Especialy if everyone is using it.

hmm.. depends what kind of firewall it is.. if it's a router switch it'll have one IP forwarded to multiple computers.. some office networks are composed of multiple routers, which in turn causes problems with incoming port connections.

With one ip to feed say 5 computers, if someone tries to connect to you (the router ip) on port 6547, unless you've preset it up to route those packets to YOUR machine on the network, the connection just dies at the router.

Most companies will have the router access paged locked out so employees can't play with it, in turn stopping people from fuggin' with it. Good luck getting around it.

Other than that, try the SOCKS thing.. if the router/server machine is set up to accept socks connections, then it just might work.

Shouldn't do it, people have been fired for using p2p software in the office.
