Interesting Find - Help Me ID
    #1649100 -

I was walking through the park and saw a pretty velvety red capped shroom, with a light yellow stem. It was growing on the natural detritus of broken old leaf mulch, after three days of heavy rain, in New Orleans. What got me interested was that I picked it, and it immediately bruised inky blue. What has me confused is the light yellow color of the stem and gills. I have included photos and hope someone might have some idea as to the type of shroom.

Here is the inky bruised broken stem

Last pic, the underside of the shroom

I am pretty sure the shroom had already sporelated and I wouldn't be able to get a print. What really impressed me was that it bruised immediately and when even just touching it.

i wouldn't really call those gills- too much of a sponge

A lot of Boletes' bruise immediately after touching-

I find those in my yard all the Time.

It's a bolete of some kind. They have pores instead of gills, you can still take a spore print. Check the stem to see if it has any reticulation, looks like netting, or any other ornamentation.

Based on the photos and your comment that it bruises blue very rapidly, you've probably found Boletus sensibilis. Unfortunately, this is a poisonous species. The symptoms typically begain about 4 hours after eating, and include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

As far as your comment that, "I am pretty sure the shroom had already sporelated and I wouldn't be able to get a print," mushrooms continuously produce spores until they dry out or rot. So, if you try, you should be able to get a spore print. It should be greenish brown.

You're correct about it being an interesting species, though.

Happy mushrooming!
