it has been raining here in newyork for a few days and i went out for a ride on the 4 wheeler and i coudlnt help notice that there was this one kind of mushroom everywhere.... It is light brown with a white stem and underside. size varries but they seem to all b about 4 or 5 inches tall and the thickness of the stem is about a half a inch. The underside is also smooth and there is no frills. its more of a sponge looking underside. I found a bunch of them on the ground in my woods next to a rotting tree stump. here are the pictures...tell me what u think. also that white thing on the mushrooms is not a dot...its a hole =p

its not smooth, its like as sponge, which means its porous and not gills. it is a boletales. they dont remind me of a boletaceae, maybe a gyrodontaceae. yet i dont know. please post a description like in the FAQ and maybe get some better pics. get a spore print too overnight. and make sure you chop down the decurrent part of the stem. (where the pores run down the stem so the pores touch the surface of the paper)

Cut off the stem and put the cap of the mushroom on peice of white paper and cover it with a bowl and let it sit for 4 to 24 hours. Some mushrooms drop spores rapidly and you'll be able to see it the color in just an hour, most take longer before you can tell what color.
Your mushroom looks like Polyporus radicatus.

yes you are right it kind of slipped my mind that this is a probably a polyporus, look at that fucking stem.

i dont know about species but that looks like a polyporus.

maybe i couldnt imagine a polyporus fruiting in huge amounts as this man said.

as for the poster: read the faq and the the three sticky threads they will help you a lot with getting acquainted.

I see these guys have you started in the right direction. A spore print will be helpful in identifying that.

If you cut it in half vertically, is it like a piece of wood, or is it fleshy, like a mushroom? After you have it cut in half, see if you can peel the tubes from the underside of the cap using your thumb (it should be either easy or impossible).

Keep us posted.

Happy mushrooming!

At least on my screen, the stem is very dark and there is pretty much no detail visible. Rather than guess based on a poor view, I prefer to ask the original poster so that we get the details correct.

What specific things can you see on the stem in those photos that lead you to a certain conclusion?
