Why doesn;t butter melt in the microwave?
    #16345829 -

I just smashed and nuked some potatoes... I put small chips of butter randomly around the plate...

Butter didn't melt, even small slivers.

What the fuck is up?

Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.

IDK I use that shit that comes in a tub and is spreadable... I don't think it's really butter.

If I didn't already know butter melts in a microwave I would say that its because the microwaves vibrate water molecules and butter doesn't contain much water

Id say its some complex thang to do with the way the waves are emitted and bounce around off the metal that the potato absorbed almost all of the radiation.

Are the butter chips in the potato, or next to it by themselves?

If they are in the potato I would guess that the potato is insulating them.  If they are next to the potato I would guess that they are in cold spots.  Spots where standing waves have nodes, parts of the wave that dont vary in intensity much (or at all).  Even though microwaves rotate to avoid this problem, different locations on the plate still get a different intensity (AFAIK).  This is why stirring is required with microwaves.

I did it just a few days ago.  Not that hard.  Halfway through, I take it out & stir it.  After that, if there are chunks, I just stir it some more.  Voila.  Melted butter.

Butter and chocolate require stirring to fully melt.  The water content and mass of the potatoes are significantly higher than that of the butter and therefore absorbing most of the radiation.  If the potatoes themselves are hot, stir the butter into them and it'll melt from the residual heat of potatoes.  Also the center of whatever mass is in the microwave will heat more quickly than the outside, so the center of the mashed potatoes is absorbing more heat than the outside.  Could also be that the center of the pieces of butter are melted and the outside looks unmelted (happens to me sometimes).  All confounding factors in why the butter didn't melt.

tl;dr Just stir the butter into the hot potatoes to melt it.

Something like that, yeah.

My microwave has two buttons, melt and soften, then it asks how many sticks. It's crazy with all it's fancy buttons.
