pink mold pics and no grow

first time questions:
6 days after inoculation (non-organic rice flower mixed with perlite, and sterilized in pressure cooker) and I see pink & yellow & no mycelium! :frown:
I inoculated everything in the bathroom sterilized by spraying lisol. Pink is below places where it was injected.

what to do? throw pink away? forget about non-organic rice flower? use only organic brown rice?





the same time on organic brown rice there is no pink mold and I see some mycelium:

Just from the look of them I'd either lack of a filter or your inoculation procedure. They don't look like they were properly prepared at all either. I would suggest following the tek and trying again:

toss it all out, whether you use organic material or not will not make a difference.

Check your sterilization procedure, your cooking procedure and make sure that you flame the needle properly.

Follow the PF Tek to the letter and you will avoid all of these problems, most likely.

As a beginner, this hobby is not forgiving when you cut corners and improvise.

Ok. I refused from PF Tek, and decided to use organic brown rice.
For contamination control I used
1. pressure cooker (like in first time)
2. inoculation was done by spore syringe on the lover shelve of oven with small fire on. did 4 jars. Used hand disinfectant, alcohol & fire for needle.
3. 2 jars in a week showed pink mold, like in first pictures (throw away), but 2 other looked fine.
4. Now 1 month later, I got a lot of white cotton like stuff inside (look at the new pictures please). Is it right looking mycelium?
5. I saved one jar to be used to inoculate other jars.
6. I put other jar in a cardboard tube and plastic box with two bowl of perlite with water in it. Plastic box have small 1mm holes near bottom for air. Check my setup and tell if it's ok please.

Why did you use whole brown rice? Why did you use perlite instead of vermiculite? Why didn't you use a still-air/glove box? Why didn't you make a SGFC? Hard-headedness, that's why. www.mushroomvideos.com Watch, read, learn, grow. If you follow the instructions, things WILL work for you. :sun:

Inoculating in the oven is worse than inoculating in open air. Build yourself a glove box, one of the best investments of money and time you can make in mycology.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you're half assing most of this. Keep researching. You need to follow the Teks as intended, they are the way they are for a reason. That reason is that they work, and well.

I can't stress how important continual studying is.

It's only organic grain I was able to buy. My rice flower was not organic.

In my walmart was only perlite. I thought it is the same. I will look in home depot for vermiculite.

well.. box have holes. what is wrong with it specifically?

Guys I follow some video on internet & Nicholas book. So I may do something wrong. I will study videos on this site.

1. If you can blend that rice to a fine powder, it'd be best to do so, and actually better than buying it pre-flour-ized :tongue:

2.Perlite and vermiculite are very different. Verm is spongy and absorbent, and perlite, as you should know by now, is a hard little pebble that has dimples all over it, creating a high surface area so more water can evaporate off of it to create humididity in your fruiting chamber.

3. Understandable, but they are absolutely necessary for consistent contam-less jars.

4. A SGFC should have 1/4" holes, spaced 2" apart, on all 6 sides. Top and bottom.

These videos were made by a resident Trusted Cultivator (RogerRabbit), and they really explain everything very well and in detail.

Listen to JoeMama1992, he gave you some great videos to work with. Roger Rabbit has put together some amazing resources. You can buy his dvd for less than 10 dollars I believe. It's very much worth it for a new person starting out with cakes.

As far as I know any brown rice flour will work, whether or not it states it's organic is not important. As long as the ingredients are only brown rice that's what you need.

Last resort you can find vermiculite sold as insulation. That variety usually comes pretty coarse and needs to grinding up more in a blender or coffee grinder before use in pf jars but other than that it's the same stuff as garden vermiculite.

Let me explain why I still don't have glove box. As I mentioned, I been unable to do it myself (i'm very unhandy).
Second of all this project is a test for my cluster headaches. So hopefully those two jars will fruit and I will got some medicine. If it will work, then I will invest more, because I will stop paying to neurologist. If not.. then there is no point except recreational use.
Anyways questions:
1. White mycelium on the last pictures look right or wrong?
2. How to fruit it?
3. Why I need brown rice flower if I have brown rice? (I didn't know that I can blend it, but now I know).
4. I read somewhere on this site that non organic grains can have fungicide in them which will kill fungi.
5. On this site I read that somebody used oven airflow for inoculation, and been successful. I used it to with 50% contamination rate. Still question remain is it right method, or the same like "open air" (as TheEaglesGift mentioned).
5. If somebody have cluster headaches please let me know if mushrooms help it.

1. Some of it does, but the tops that are fuzzy should probably be of concern, but I'm not good at all at spotting contams, as I have yet to experience any.

Question 2 will be answered by the videos.

3. Because it is much easier for the mycelium to consume and digest, and I believe it's also because the whole rice could lead to a bit of an umbalanced moisture content, if using the standard 2:1:1 Verm:Water:BRF ratio.

4. Some may, but I have yet to hear of any. Bob's Red Mill, for examplee, is fine, and it doesn't mention anything about being organic on the packaging.

5. That was probably a 10 year old post, cultivators now have advanced past techniques that don't work well, if at all. T.E.G. was just comparing one horrible tek to the other, both open-air and stove inocculation should never be used.

6. I don't, but many people have said that it helps tremendously.

50 percent contamination rate is not very good at all. With proper sterile procedure people get far below 1 percent contamination rate. A glove box, however hard you think it will be to make, is a huge step in the right direction.

Open air inoculation is better than inoculating in an oven, but still far from optimal. Stop inoculating in your oven. If you truly refuse to make a glove box, open air inoculation in a clean room with no drafts would be better than the oven.

A glove box can even be made out of a cardboard box and saran wrap.

It's superior if you're doing the pf tek which is what I assume you're attempting. You can use straight whole brown rice like you have there but you would need to use it like other whole grains and spawn it to another substrate that can hold more water. Trying to fruit it like that won't work. If by some miracle anything grows before it drys out it will be ridiculously tiny.

No offense bro but if it's for your cluster headaches,
I suggest you use the search engine
and find the answers you want to know.
I also suggest you grind that brown rice next time. 
Also looks like there is too much moisture in
the Jars from when you sterilized them.

Why would that be offensive? And I don't think anyone named Jessica
would appreciate being called "bro".
But, you are coming from a good place with it so I bet she does not even
mind. But, telling someone to use the search engines is usually reserved
for very common questions. This however is quite infrequent. Also, the lady
just needs help with a terrible situation.
I am sure that she knows all about cluster headaches
since she has them.

I don't know anyone who has cluster headaches but I saw something thing
on tv about reducing them with mushrooms.

One of the cans for fruiting (right) caught mold, and I threw it away.


After issues with mold I decided to follow forum advise and build glove box myself:




So I tried to do PF TEK again. So questions:
1. As been advised, I blend brown rice, but it didn't blend completely. After 10 min of blending blender became hot and I stopped it because do not want it to burn. Half of brown rice became cut in half, another half kind of flour. What blender you are using to blend it?
(Later, I went in store and bought brown rice flour, but it is not organic, didn't use it yet.)
2. When I flame sterilize the needle, it was hard to put it into glove box through hole & sleeve. I turn syringe parallel to my arm and one time touch my skin with needle and burn it (burn is really minor). How you do it?
3. Inoculation in the glove box took good 20 min, and because I didn't had good posture, my back hurt. I moved on different table with glove box, keeping arms in it.. heh one of the Silicone sealing partially broke because of it, and later I resealed it.


Week later I checked jars, and see white mycelium around cut rice grains:


Now I decided to trow away the second jar, because somebody sad that it will not fruit. To my surprise i saw this:


Actually before all this story I used mycelium from jar this jar to inoculate brown rice in other jars:
