Help with IDing...

This has got to be the biggest mushroom I have ever seen not in a book!!  :shocked: My guess is Agaricus campestris (Meadow Mushroom), but I am not that sure.  I found these in an open grass field. They have a slight mushroom smell, the caps are soft, and the spores are a purplish-brown. The diameter of the cap is 8" and the stalk was 4". They seem to be darkening while they age. Can someone help me id this? Thanks.

Nice photos.

You've gotten the first part of the ID right, that's an Agaricus. The hard part is identifying them to species.

You already mentioned the odor, so that leaves the bruising. Please cut the mushroom in half vertically, then scrape the inside with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the flesh. Then watch for color changes, possibly different in different areas. Some changes are rapid, but they can take up to an hour.

Thank you! I cut it in half and it seems to be turning orangish/brown. I think. :-)

I can't tell from the photo, did you scrape it with the knife edge? Some of these guys don't do much unless you do.

Could you verify the odor also, please? Try crushing the base of the stem with your fingers and sniffing where the stem joins the cap. The odors you're looking for (but might not find) could be sweet (almond extract-like) or perhaps like phenol or library paste.

Initially it keys out most closely with Agaricus osecanus, the problem being that I don't think that species is recorded from your part of the country (Ohio). It's not Agaricus campestris - that species only gets up to about 4 inches across.

Unfortunately, Agaricus is a difficult genus. I regularly find specimens I can't identify, even with a microscope.

I did try to scrape it like you said, but maybe I didn't do it right. This was my first time trying this myself. :smile: . The smell is pretty mushroomy and earthy i'd say. Maybe it is Agaricus arvensis? That is what someone else has told me it could possibly be. They are bigger.

Agaricus arvensis is a possibility. The problem is that they have a hollow to stuffed stem (not solid), bruise yellow, and smell sweet (at least when young). A. osecanus is similar, but has a solid stem and is more likely to not bruise or have a distinct odor.

If I have to choose a species, I'll guess that your mushrooms are Agaricus cf. osecanus, possibly that species and just a new record of that species in the east. It might not be that species, but I don't have anything else in any of my books that's a close match, so I'll go with that.
