Agaricus Campestris?
    #11301495 - 10/22/09 08:07 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat:
Found growing in the lightly-used soccer field of a high school near my house, mostly in fairy rings.

Gills:
Pink, not attached to stem, close.

Stem:
1-3 inches in length, 1/2 inch width, solid.

Cap:
.75-3 inches diameter, white, some with little white speckles- kind of like the ones on corpinus mushrooms.

Spore print color:
Coming.

Bruising:
No apparent bruising, but the top of one of the stems, right where it connects to the cap was a little bit rosy, like the gills.

Other information:
Scent: not much smell on top of the cap, but the gills smell really pleasant, faintly like strawberry flavoured chewing gum.
Taste: Tastes good, like standard button mushrooms (i have only sampled a little bit of the stem)

It does appear to be Agaricus campestris due to the lack of staining, quickly collapsing annulus and mild odor.

As one last check, make sure they don't smell like ink as you fry them.

Your photos didn't work because you posted HTML, which is not supported.

Instead, post the full URL to the .jpg between [img] tags.

Photobucket will give you the url, or you can right click on your image in photobucket and select copy image location.

Thanks alan, I'll be sure to watch out for the ink smell. Thanks for the photo help too. :super:

Spore prints are still light, but appear to be tan in colour, and the one with the most spores dropped is darker brown. I'm fairly sure what I have is Campestris, but my field guide says that the print should be blackish-brown, and mushroomexpert.com says that it should be chocolate-brown. Do you think the information I have is enough to ID as Campestris? I really want to have these with dinner tonight, so is it OK for me to cook them without waiting for a darker print if I watch out for the inky smell? I also think that rather than Agaricus Campestris var. Campestris, they are Agaricus Campestris var. Squamulosus, could someone confirm this for me?

Had them last night, I sauted them with basil and red wine. My first major find of an edible.
