Excellent photographs, and the brown staining is important. If it bruises brown it is definitely *not* Agaricus campestris (sorry, gregre, I'm sure you were trying to be helpful), which does not change color on bruising.
Cut the mushroom in half vertically, then bruise the inside of the stem near the base with the edge of your knife blade and watch for a couple minutes for any color changes, especially at the extreme base.
Also, what does it smell like? Smell near the base of the stem where you bruised it and near the top of the stem by the gills. You may detect a almondy (sweet, like benzaldehyde), phenolic (unpleasant, like library paste or metallic or phenol), mushroomy (like the button mushrooms from the grocery), little or no smell, or something else entirely. The odor of Agaricus is important for identification.
Agaricus are difficult to identify accurately to species. I'll do my best (after you let me know about the stuff above), but the ID shouldn't be considered completely accurate until you verify some things with a microscope.
Based only on your description and photos it resembles Agaricus bisporus, the common button mushroom sold at the grocery. Answers to the questions above could indicate that it is something else.

Thats an alwfully long stem for a button mushroom, more like a Meadow mush. The leftover ring rather than a full skirt is also indication of the Meadow (campestris). As for the bruising brown, did it really bruise or jsut discolour a bit? The campestris will discolour brown.
All in all, it shows how easy it is to have difficulties iding shrooms just from pics and descrips., even the common store shroom. Is there is mycological society in your area? Bring it to them and have someone who is familiar with your local musrhooms positevly id it.
