Trichocereus bridgesii sunburns
    #16309438 -

Hello all. This is my first post on here and I've got a few questions about growing this specific cactus. I was referred to this site by a friend for questions pertaining to growing them if I had trouble. I received multiple young cacti(roughly 5-6 months old) and potted them all.

At first when I had brought them outside, I mainly kept them in the shade because I was warned they were sensitive to sun when they were young. They grew very slowly for a while. I have just moved them into semi full sun in my greenhouse this week, using a thin mesh over the shelf on top of them because of how hot it's been(90-100f a few times recently). One of them is roughly twice as big as the others and twice as thick, with only one semi catching up. I used different sized pots and it kind of causes their watering schedule to be a little different as well. How much does watering affect the growth of them?

But a few have developed small brown sunburns on the tip(excluding the monster, and the slightly smaller one??), but they are not mushy at all. The skin is still firm. I have grown cactus pears in my greenhouse and they thrive in the full sun from a small age, and even minimal water it seems. I am debating wether to move them back in the shade, or see if they adjust. This is my first time growing them, so if someone with a bit more experience with growing younger cacti can give me some advice I'd appreciate it a lot.

Yeah you should have waited a bit longer than 5-6 months old before potting them. Thats your first mistake having them in diferent sized pots. Its good to have in there trays till there about a year old because you can water them in one uniform quantity. Pots can pose problems because they can drain and saturate at varying levels that can be hard to judge.
Keeping them at high humidity and in constantly moist soil is crucial for good healthy fast growth.
It sounds like you've got the light levels right. Semi full sunlight will do fine.

They were previously potted, and I received them at that age and potted them immediately. Thank you very much for the quick reply though. I thought I needed to let the soil dry up before re watering. Do you know if compost would help speed their growth up? I was thinking it most likely would but wasn't completely sure since Ive never used it with cacti before.

Cact seedlings are odd. They require high humidity and constant moister for the first year or so.
Keep them in a growing medium that will allow air to get to the roots. Mixes of potting mix and sand can work well. Just get out any big chunks of bark etc...
No need for compost, just let them uptake the nutrients from the medium their in.
