Id'ing cacti

is there a foolproof way to positively id a san pedro or peruvian torch cactus? i'm asking because there are a lot of cacti all over the place and i wonder "what if this has a load of mescaline just waiting for me to extract it?".
i'm talking some seriously huge monster cacti, some smaller and all with different number of ribs.
maybe i'm dumb but they all look pretty much the same to me.

No. IDing is hard. Takes research. Takes time.

Either take the time to research and learn how to identify these beautiful cacti or be okay with lots of incorrect IDs. I will say though that it would be a good idea to find out which species are commonly mistaken for pachanoi and learn to ID those species. That will help you.

once you've found or have your first pedro/per you will quickly get to know what they look like. Also, bite into it a bit. alkaloids = bitter
also, you should post some pics, we'll ID them for you.

I can judge their potency by plugging them for a half a minute.

damnit if you read it properly, you would see what i said was that "after identifying the active then you can bite into it (to judge the potency) " yes of course most cacti are bitter, alkaloids are bitter tasting.
and many cacti have other alkaloids apart from mescaline :P and no you won't die from biting random cacti (i like to bite my cacti, i find bridgesii are alot more bitter than any other active ) !

i bought about 10 or 12 random cacti before getting a san pedro myself, out of those i got a macrogonus, spachinus, and a couple trichs i have yet to properly ID, but i know for sure they are trichs now. i have also ordered peruvianus and bridgesii(and i agree with merkin on bridgesii being most bitter of actives, excluding peyote) but those dont count, they were already IDed before being shipped to me. once you learn the characteristics(by trial and error in my experience) of trichs you will know from a distance what you are looking at. i suggest ordering cacti to save yourself money, time, and possible disappointment.

ive bitten into random cacti, not mammalaria of course though.... yow.
some are much better tasting than pedro of course.
trouts notes isnt the best, i would go with posting it here over trouts notes on identification. once u know a pedro theres no mistaking one.
