Mushroom compost for cacti
    #7931388 - 01/25/08 06:29 PM (16 years, 7 days ago)

'For a nutritious, moisture retentive yet freely draining mix which is perfect for a wide range of rainforest plants, including a rare Spanish red pineapple, make a mix using one part mushroom compost - for its moisture holding capacity and food; one part sand, which helps drainage, and one part composted pine bark, which adds to the particle size. This mix should resemble a natural soil, just mix it thoroughly to ensure it’s blended well.'
Use that mix with your spent mushroom compost, works like a damn charm for cacti

I would only use mushrooms soil as a fertiziler...

Not as the basis for the entire soil.

Here's my "list" on the subject-

Cactus Soil-

Sifted and Washed Coarse Sand
Coarse Pumice
Coarse Perlite
Rich completely decomposed Loam
A small amount of Cactus fertilizer

Instructions- Once all the ingredients are mixed bake the soil at 500F for one hour.

Organic Cactus Fertilizer-

Composted Tea
Wood Ashes
Composted Leafs
Horse, Goat, Cow or Sheep Manure
Gypsum (small amounts)
Bonemeal
Ground Hoof and Horn (small amounts)
Urine
Earthworm Castings
Bat Guano
Lake or River Silt
Crushed Quartz
Fish meal (small amounts)
Seaweed meal
Crushed Sea-Shells
Mushroom Compost
Crushed Limestone (small amounts)
Cactus Clippings- skin, spines, etc.
Coco Coir
Live Worms

Instructions- Allow all the material to compost in a container for 3-7 months.

Notes- Study what trace elements and minerals exist in each species habitats and add them accordingly.

Holy shit thats detailed. What is the fertilizer to soil ratio you use? I got both my soil recipes off of australian ABC.

MY recipes for the seedling growing mix is from there too
'To make the cutting and seed raising mix, simply use one part perlite to one part of the coir fibre, and mix thoroughly. (But when using perlite wear a dust mask, or settle the dust by moistening it with water, otherwise it can cause a choking cough). Using perlite helps to get air into the mix, and that's excellent for young seedling and cutting roots. Use this tailor made mix for unusual and rare plants such as these seeds of an old cabbage variety from Kenya called Brassica oleracea var. capitata 'Old Women Meet & Gossip'.'

Just a hand full of the fertz. mixed into a large pot.

I like useing all organic fertz. and mixing it all myself...

I complied that list of organic fertz. from books and the internet...

It should contain all the trace minerals cacti need to make their "goodies"

I think trace elements are important to the production of psychoactive chemicals in both Lophophora and Trichocereus cacti...

That's why the ones grown in habitat are so much more potent than ones grown out of habitat...

Fish meal (small amounts)
Seaweed meal
Crushed Sea-Shells
Bonemeal
Ground Hoof and Horn (small amounts)
Urine
Earthworm Castings
Bat Guano
Lake or River Silt

what type of urine?

Also, whats a good fungacide for cacti seeds?

I just use one of those orange buckets and put all the organic fertz. in it....

Drill some holes in the lid.

Chuck some big fat worms in...

And let it sit for a few months.

Then blend it up.

You really have some great information you post. Im getting ready to plant some T. pachanoi and T. peruvianus. In previous years ive used pre-made cactus soil from home depot with fine results and will do likewise this year.

But I think i will utilize this post and start my own compost fertilizer tomorrow. How often do you add your fertilizer to your cacti?

Im probably going to keep them in smaller pots until about 5-7 months old then transplant them into large construction buckets where they will grow til near maturity before finally getting placed outside.

What is the best way to use compost fertilizers with cactus?

I remove the top layer or coarse sand from my cacti...

Place the fertz. on top and mix it in best I can...

I then replace the layer of coarse river sand...

I use my organic fertz. at the beginning of every season...

Since it's organic it last alot longer than synthetic fertz. which can be easy washed out of the soil.

Things like ground hoof and horn fertilize all season!
