cacti parasites again

hi everybody! i think i've got parasites again. the mealy bugs are almost under control but now it seems there's a different plague in my cacti. it looks like 'battle scares' but i'm guessing they're parasites because they spread to the next arms of the plants and because if i scrape them there will be cactus green skin underneath. whats the name of this stuff? what does it do to my plants? how do i kill it?? thanks...

those are scale insects and they are eating into your cactus. you will have to take a letter opener or something and pry them off. I would recommend repotting your cactus with all new soil and a clean pot. use a toothbrush to get ALL the old soil off the roots. mealy and scale can live in the roots

holy shit! i suspected they were scale plague! i will scrape them off, 1:1 ethanol/water seem to soften them... it just becomes hard work when you have large or monstrose plants! as soon as i clean my plants i will repot all of them and i wonder where i'll throw away all that dirty soil (not in my garden!). but at least this parasite seems less damaging than mealy bugs... thanks a lot cyan-shaman!

are they outdoors? i have found that when pedro has full sunlight it will overcome all obsticles. but if your in the kind of climate that makes this impossible(like me) then we will have to research and find a effective cure for these bastards

they were both outdoors where i bought them, they seemed healthy and i have indeed noticed scale spreading much faster after i brought them to partial sun... i'll bring them outdoors as they're healthy, i don't want to contaminate my other cacti!!!

hey gumby, those in your pic look more like cochonilla bugs for me, they're very easy to get rid of. scale looks like a lignified area of the skin... althought it also can start in small spots looking somewhat like cochonillas.

It was some kind of scale parasite, I hosed it down with pesticide and let it sit for a week or 2. Then I took an old tooth brush to it and the stuff just flaked right off. Cactus is doing great now.

Ive had the same thing with my euphorbias & pedros...look over your cacti with a magnifying glass to see them better and pick them off with tweezers, make sure you get all of them!..quarantine the cacti with the bugs, and like cyan said , repotting may be the answer if you cant get rid of them completely.

what i've got isn't the same thing that gumby shows - it looks rather like a callused area over the cactus surface. it starts as small dots but as it grows it bonds together to form this 'callused' area.

scale is hard to spread from plant to plant, but mealy will destroy your whole collection if left unchecked.
