Hehe neat

This is pretty damned funny. An interesting discovery about cakes was made when the grower was birthing a jar and accidentally knocked a pin clean off the cake. The pin was originally on the side of the jar, and when the jar knocked it clean, the pin ended up on the top of the cake after rolling along the side of the jar as it was being opened.

The grower was too lazy and frustrated to pick up the dislodged pin, so he just let it sit loosely on the top of the cake. Anyway the amazing thing is that several days later he thought he noticed that the pin was getting bigger. A few days later, this was confirmed. Apparently the pin, being mycelium, had reattached itself to the cake. It eventually grew to full size, just be letting it rest on top of the cake!

This would be impossible with plants, as they have roots, and it's pretty neat that it works with pins. It works because they are the same material as the rest of the cake and thus can absorb water and nutrients if it touches the mycelium of the cake.

Lesson: if you knock off a developing pin then don't throw it; instead just put it on the top of the cake and it will grow! I wonder what would happen if someone put the dislodged tiny pin on its head on the cake. Would be interesting to have a mushroom with 2 heads LOL!

What are you talking about mez? How would leaving a dislodged pin on top of the cake create a contam? The pin is just mycellium. And it was a young pin, not a rotting abort.

The same thing happened to me when I was harvesting some shrooms one day.  I had just picked a big juicy one and not realizing that I had done it but pulled off his brother along with him. I had gotten so frustrated that I had picked off the lil shroomie before it's time, I just stuck it back on top of the cake and sure enough in a few days that thing got huge. I guess your story kinda reminded me of what happened to me seeings how they are similar. Anyways.... Good luck with your babies.
