Yeah that's what I was thinking when I made the thread. It's a super powerful motive and seems to be the drive for most everything else and relatively characteristic of humanity.

its interesting you talk about suffering but then illustrate it with your own suffering, compassion generally has to do with the suffering of others

is this thread about the suffering of others or suffering in general?

In my experience the maxim that no good deed goes unpunished has held pretty much consistently true.  I naturally have a tendency towards being empathetic towards others but I've learned to suppress it for the sake of my general well-being.  Nice guys often finish last.

suffering in general and compassion in general. I only use my personal experience due to its relevance and directness.

Mirror neurons...they make one feel suffering of others like your own, as far I understood.
Some are more evolutioned into it, some are less.
Primarily one has to understand one's own suffering therefor first.

Did you not have to fight for stuff amongst siblings?

If a deed results in suffering then the deed was clearly not compassionate. I think what many consider good is anything but compassionate myself.

yeah I was asking you. I think have to fight siblings for things teaches people to take more or take faster, in general.

Huh?  The way I see it, plenty of acts can be done out of compassion yet the results may not end up being optimal.

going back to your original question then, would it be also correct to rephrase it, "Why am I bothered by suffering so much?"

perhaps then it has to do with what you are aware of and you can look to your history to see why you've become so aware of suffering.

A compassionate intent does not = a compassionate act
Compassionate intent tends to refine actions when they do not result in a compassionate outcome

Not following. Can you explain how you see a lesser of two evils in that?

This is why I stated I have empathy but little compassion. I don't have to act on empathy. Compassion demands it.

One day I came across a fly caught in a spider's trap, and I felt compassion for the fly. As I was about to release it from the web I thought about the spider, and realized I would be depriving the spider.

In such a case, using your definitions, there could be no compassionate act.

Often times we must act in situations where there will be suffering no matter how we act, yet we can pick the lessor of two evils. I would say choosing the lessor of two evils is still compassion even though suffering is created through the act.

yeah I know the spider fly thing isn't lessor of two evils

Ah yeah I see. I think ideally one finds what leads to those situations and avoids them. When in a situation with no compassionate out, my guess is a compassionate opportunity was missed earlier on in the causal chain. That's been my experience anywho.

You could painlessly kill the fly before feeding it to the spider.

right that brings up an interesting point about compassion, it allows for murder as long as no one else suffers as a consequence. in fact, if we really wanted to end suffering we should take out all life on the planet.

perhaps kickle's on the verge of mass murder...

Twice in two years I stopped to help stranded motorists. Both needed a jump. The car owner hooked the cables up backwards and fried my battery. Recompense? None. Cost of tow truck and new battery - $180.

Did I learn, Fuck no, because I am a good little Hobbit. The next time I made sure to hook up the battery cables - correctly. The result? Her car electrical system was shorted which blew out both my battery and my alternator. Cost $350. Compensation? None.

Your car breaks down, your house catches on fire, a mugger attacks you - don't look to me.
