Well I'm not really sure what kind of advice I was going to type up...

Quick question... why didn't you take this drawing to learn the pen tool? Would of been perfect with the round edges all over it.

You'd be able to outline all of the shapes in the image into work paths.

Honestly I probably would of cheated and used gradients to give the illusion of lighting and depth.

the burn and dodge tool come to mind also if working with raster

I am attending school for a bachelors in GD. I say school.

You learn so much stuff that tutorials and websites can't teach. It is also a great way look at your competition for the future. Networking is a must.

Most teachers are professionals in their fields so it is good (at least for me) to get advice about the business aspect of gd.

Yeah, I was trying to research too much information at once, forgot all about it... I'm going to concentrate on one step at a time, get the pen tool mastered first then move on to other tools and techniques.
