A contest in graphic design, winner gets their design printed

working on the promotions side of things i have come up wiht an idea. in the spirit of helping people while getting out name out there, i would like to create a "Get out of a bad trip Free" card, in the style of the monopoly get out of jail free card.

i would like to keep a nice yellow background, and have the monopoly man still flying out of the cage, but with distorted eyes.. if anyone can design this i will be taking it to the admins and moderators to make aprovable text for the back side.

and if it is approved your design will be printed on thousands of shroomery promotional cards.

there is no gaurantee, but we are going to put some very re-assuring info on the back of the card

Do you think the cage is too busy? It almost reminds me of the chaotic aspects of a trip gone bad, but I'm not sure how it'll look in print. If you have any ideas, feel free to tell me.

All of those sound good, it might be best to make several different kinds of cards, each with a different helpful message on the back.

It would be great to be lost at a festival and be handed one of these cards. It'd probably make my day.

we could make 52 images like this, and put them on a word document. I guess about 8 per page. on the other side, would be playing cards. You could print them out, then cut.

How about having a friendly looking entity (mushroom, A woman in the vein and dress of Lady Liberty, etc.) extending her hand and HELPING him to fly the coop?? Or holding the cage door open for him to fly free.

It seems that it would be comforting and it wouldn't have anything bizarre on the front to reiterate that the person is indeed having a bad trip.(instant comfort)

I don't know if ya'll want to stick strictly to shrooms, but people have bad trips on all sorts of stuff, so you could maybe mention the effects(duration) of acid on there also. It seems that it would bring in people of all types by showing that The Shroomery has a Little something for everyone. But maybe not...just a thought.

I'd love to help design this card, but I know nothing about graphic design.

Yeah... this idea seems a little surreal, almost creepy. If i saw that, i wouldnt necessarily want to read what was on the card, i might get too paranoid and think it was a trick or something...

Why not a  :tongue:, with a positive message, giving a healthy boost of confidence? "remember, your just hallucinating" :wink: ... lol, that was a joke,

but seriously like something. "Dont worry now, everythings gonna be alright" :wink: : ) ... with a nice wide smile, and some nice pleasing tones... with a little note on the bottom saying "friendly advice on back of card". or something... I dont know. But i just think that picture is a little, f r e a k y.

i think it should have some kind of text that guides the person to change his mindset. like "imagine a spere of warm protective light around you." or something of that kind.

now i've only had three trips that started going bad (as far as i can remember). but each of those times ive managed to save the trip by focusing intensely on positive imagery.

I think its a cute idea.....I don't think you should take the statements too seriously though, do you think someone gonna get you one when your tripping???

I would recommend as a promotional aid (I've done a bit of advertising for my three businesses) something a little more positive...ie...learn to grow like a pro or Prepare, Explore, Educate ect.

Also I would recommend using yellow paper instead of wasting all the yellow ink.

Hopefully I'll have time to submit something...

My entry... I redrew the monopoly guy/cage in a vector drawing program so its scaleable and print quality, its already in cmyk, the back side is consistent with our other business cards, yadda yadda yadda, W00T. :grin:

On a more serious note: It is a very charming idea, but there are two kinds of Bad Trips: Bad Trips caused by wrong dose/wrong day/wrong enviroment and Bad Trips caused by inner psychodynamics.

For the former category this charming idea of "get out of a bad trip free" card can be very effective. Even a humorous design will do the trick sometimes.

But psychological Bad Trips... there is no "get out free". There should not be an easy way out. The only way out is to surrender and let the horrors unfold. Then it will turn out to be not as bad as you thought and you gain insight along with experience.

Your monopoly card idea however suggests escape. The text should not be escapist. There is no "free" way out of a bad trip, that's a consumer society quick fix.

The way out actually is the way in.
Reassurance should not be aimed at holding on and getting out, but rather letting go and going in. The experience is SAFE. Fighting it is NOT. If you are scared of the drug and do not trust it that actually can harm you.

Imagine a horrified kid holding the card, the cardboard limp with sweat, rocking back and forth and groaning: "getoutfree-getoutfree-getoutfree-getoutfree"
That's holding on, clutching at straws. The bad trip then is guaranteed to be bad up to the very end.

Hmm.. what to put on the card?
I think the main message should be that it is *safe* and that you should try to relax and let the trip do it's thing.

I know it's not a music festival message but then again mushrooms are not a music festival drug.

IT IS NOT DANGEROUS
RELAX
SURRENDER YOURSELF
IT WILL PASS

This is the best sequence I can come up with, perhaps differently worded. Naturally the above card isnt my serious entry for the competition!

its true that 99% of the time there is not any physical danger, but sometimes even if its just .001% there is danger and a doctor needs to be called, or ems... and i wouldnt awnt anyone with a false sense of security, not calling the help that they need....

I think I agree with Wiccan too...in that state of mind, the ridiculousness of a Monopoloy parody might just cause further delusions. While I think the idea if very clever and creative, I'm not sure its the *best* this community could come up with to put on a card to help people out of bad trips.

Obviously I didn't come up with the idea (although I'm in the process of making a card and I'll post it later), but I don't think this is as crazy as some people are making it out to be. Maybe I just interpreted things differently, but I thought the whole idea was that the card isn't so much a form of currency, as in, trading it in during a bad trip in exchange for an end to the trip (because clearly that's a bit unrealistic, at least judging by my experiences with bad trips, not to mention there's no one to give it to). This is how it is used in the game of Monopoly, but I think the person who thought up the idea was thinking a little more abstractly.

I think that the idea of the card is that it's more of a means of preventing a bad trip. So "get out of one bad trip free," in my opinion, in this case, translates into something more along the lines of "read this card [and/or visit the Shroomery] before tripping so you will prevent one bad trip." I think it makes plenty enough sense ...

Oh yeah, and is there a deadline?

Thank you for posting that, I was JUST about to post something along those lines. You guys need to realize, this card is not meant to actually get you out of a bad trip. :smirk: It does not have to radiate 'good vibes' in order to make you feel better during a stressful psychedelic moment. The whole monopoly card gimmick is, when you get right down to it, basically just marketing, as cold and unpersonable as that may sound. Its an attention getter, meant to increase traffic, and personally... I think its a clever idea.

I agree with strun9x0ut, the idea of using a card as preventive medicine is logical.

If I were to attend a gathering of some sort. I would get a kick out of receiving them.

Plus, I must say, that strun9x0ut's entry, has my vote for the best so far. However, I think, instead of just one design being chosen for printing. I like the idea of dozens of different designs being available.

what exactly is this card for? just marketing and promotion? i do a lot of graphic design, i'd be interested in creating something, but does it have to be exactly like you have lined out? would you be accepting any kind of design, as long as its a business card type of idea? i'll be much more creative and productive if the rules are more freeform. i'm also an illustrator so the vector kinda look you're going for will be fun for me to work with. get back to me and i'll see what i can come up with.

what we really need is official shroomery-condoms with text printed along the shaft. maby something like:

:penis: .."learn about penis-envy", or;

:grin:  .."watch it grow", or what about;

:naughty:  .."ready to inoclulate!".

and then the shroomery logo right on the top. that would be way more popular that some old cards.

One thing that I think would be awesome to put on the card is this phrase "Rember your going to wake up tommorow normal", I say this because when I tripped for my first time I ate and eighth and my friend ate eighth also, We tripped for about 8 hours. I think we tripped for so long because it was on my 8 mile walk so once we stopped moving we just start tripping even harder, That and watching the sun come up was beutifal but anyway were about half way home and my friend looks over at me serious as I've ever seen anyone with his shirt covering his face he goes "DUDE! What if I am fucking stuck like this for the rest of my life.....I THINK I AM" and with that he took off down the street while people in the neighboorhood who were watering there gardens and stuff at like 6:30 in morning just stared at the kid running down the road with a shirt over his face. Though I though it was comical at the time I later once he finally slowed down I told him what I said at the beginging and it worked. That just my two-cents though.

This is going to be great! a deck of Shroomery cards with a clever logo and clever art will have people holding & rejoycing our logos for hours on end.

You might think of personalizing the upper cards, so that the Kings will bear pics of lessay Leary, McKenna, Shulgin and Owsley and what have you not. The numbered cards might have a central band that in a short catchy phrase conveys GOOD information, offering opportunity for 36 words of wisdom. A psychedelic deck of cards w/ shroomery logos!

--attract attention to our site
--provide a fun gaming tool
--raise psychedelic awareness'
--provide 36 "drug wisdoms"

An alternative would be trading cards "Shroom?ry - gotta catch em all!"  :evil: where you have the setup of the usual trading card of a beautiful pic (lessay a PF jar or a Cactus) with a block of useful information.

If you spread a ton of these on a big festival it might lead to all sorts of interaction and exchange of GOOD drug information :thumbup:
