pan subb id help needed (pics)
    #1618372 - 06/08/03 12:56 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

today seemed like a great day for hunting.  at the first stable we found, we asked for permission to hunt for mushrooms in their composting hay and manure.  the owners happily obliged, and even helped us look
these look so close, but having never found pan subbs before, i would appreciate some help making absolutely certain of their id.  as you can see in the habitat pictures, these were growing in the composting hay/manure outside of a stable.

here is a shot of the whole shroom (i know the base looks slightly blue, but interestingly enough, it only looks like that in the photo)

im making spore prints now, but here are a couple of gill shots.

here is a larger habitat picture.  im pretty sure its the same species

i've got pictures of other species growing on this compost pile, and also growing on horse plops in the field, and i'll post these tomorrow, but they are light tan with light tan gills, and darker brown nipples.  they clearly weren't even a candidate for subbs, so these pics take precedence
oh yeah, these were found in cherokee county.

i would be tickled to death to tell you that you've found Pan. Subbs but I don't think those are =(

The stems, gills, and most imporantly cap color just don't Pan out so to speak- lol

Pan Subbs have white fringes on the edges of their caps.

drat.  i guess i did kind of get my hopes up pretty easy for what i knew was a bit of a stretch.  que serra serra.  i guess that's yet another strike for me :smirk:
although on the bright side of things, i did find success with the "ask permission" approach to hunting.  this does ease my nerves a bit.
i guess i'll try again next weekend.  it's supposed to rain ALL WEEK here in atlanta.
i'd REALLY like to find some weilii's.  i'm checking all over the new neighborhoods, but to no avail.
incidentally, could any weillii hunters explain to me why the developed land should be 3-8 years old?  what's wrong with 1 or 2?  i'm under the impression that mycelium grows rather rapidly.
anyway, thanks for your responses.  it's great to have experienced input when newbies hunt together.

oh yeah.  the spore print appears to be black (to me).  also, when i sliced the cap in half, the gills look to me to be free, but i suppose that it's possible they are attached adnexed.  i haven't yet been able to really distinguish between these.

all panaeolus species have black spores. panaeolina sp. which are a genus of their own have dark brown spores i believe.

or is panaeolina a subgenus?

These appear to be Panaeolus papilionaceus, which are pretty common on horse manure.

They are two separate genera.

One belongs to the Strophariaceae (Panaeolina foenisecii) and the other to the Coprinaceae (Panaeolus)
