Glad to see that people notice the important things like only having one ball...hehe...so what if I did...lmfaso...see kids, take your time when posting otherwise you might only end up with one ball. Anyways so what do you guys think of the panns? Those conic twisty ones look alot like the casters we get up here, except the are much more conical and well...twisty, the majority blued at the base...and make for a real nice trip...cheers.

GODDMNIT!!!!!!!!!
I found shrooms fitting the description u just gave in Ottawa about a week ago and was told that they were inky caps and not active so I threw out about 500 shrooms. I found them in an area that was just sodded and the grass was very lush after the big rains we?ve been having.
Here?s a crappy pic of them if you can tell me if they?re active from it I?m sure I can find more growing around the same area the next big rainy session.
just realized that it?s raining as I type this... Time to go pick I think

Aww thanks guys, hehe they like my pics they really like my pics...hehe. I don't know who told you those were inky caps, because to me they don't even resemble inkies...but who am I to blow against the wind. Although the picture is not that good, they show a pretty good resemblance to some of the ones I found, puck them again...only if they are not in my patches...just playin =). Try to get a better picture, but if the print is black, and they are kinda thick and fleshy, then I think you have a winner. Cheers, I will be posting more pics soon.

yeah what Mr. Mushrooms said, I have a few field guides, have scoured them until the pages are worn, the same goes for the internet...and these boards. What I suggest is that you go back to the beginning of the hunting forum posts, also with the pictures forum, and read through any threads that might be of interest. long before I joined (the first time) I did this with pretty much all of the mushroom related forums...
As a side note, yes we had some nice rain last night, could use another shower though...went out to a couple of my patches, and found about 30 decent sized subbs and casters...I love it when it rains
Cheers

Hey Thomas. Nice looking mushrooms! I find lots of subbs here. Never casters though..I need to find out more about them and then maybe I'll start seeing some. How is the caster trip? Man I ate some of the subbs last weekend and had one CRAZY crazy trip!! It was awesome. I got rain today, and am hoping to find some more!! I'm not sure how long after the rain to look though. Nice pics, see ya dude.

Thanks Mr Field., yup tomorrow should be decent. I don't find mine at farms, although I would clean if I had a car...damb. Anyways, like I posted above, casters and other active northeastern panns can be found in new or well manured lawns, that are frequently rained on, or watered. Check em out.
Post some more pics cheers.

StInvitroThomas I don't know how I did it but I missed this whole thread. I am very interrested in these Pans as I think I have them growing in my yard in Toronto. They are growing in the soil at the base of a woodpile, not in the wood. I have seen photos of Pan subs growing in wood chips. As well, I have been putting manurer in the garden for years. They look similar to the flat white ones with the silver stems. They've flushed several times this year with only a few mushrooms. Each time they flush, they seem to have a different look. As they age they change colour. They end up looking like Pan subs with a tan centre on a light top and the dark brown ring around the margin. After the last flush I put a bit of aspen litter on them and sprinkled them with manurer. A few days after a good soaking with the hose I got a flush of 15. I collected them yesterday and dried them. If I get a little more confident in my ID, I will have them to eat. The problem I have is that the ID info at the beginning of the Shroomery says the spores are brown and you and MJshroomer say the spores are black. Mine are very very dark brown almost black. At first glance they look black. They start brown and get darker as the mushrooms age. There is no hint of purple at all. This all started for me because I wanted to naturalize the Pan subs in my garden as they do grow around here. I have the Mr G spores now and I can begin my introduction. His are supposed to be stronger than average. Perhaps I will be able to have a taste test between his tropical-sissy Florida Pan subs and my hearty-hardy Canadian Subs. Soon my garden will be cooking.

I found that on some of the panns, if the mushrooms were pretty wet...the sporeprints would almost look a little brownish at first, soon after however they were certainly black...sometimes purple black. I would like to see some good pics of yours though. Either way, use the print, grow out some panns and compare...should be cool.
