Analyze this girl's interview

Television is obviously exaggerated, but I can't quite put my finger on what psychological state is being played out. Something strange if afoot here with Kimbra's social demeanor. She has darting eyes, quick and fake smiles, and a dismissive tone of voice. Nervousness and heightened self-awareness doesn't quite explain it. A really weird moment is at 03:46-03:49.

Shy & nervous about being in the spotlight? That's really the only that comes to my mind. I'd guess that she's somewhat new to fame & thinking something along the lines of "Holy fuck, I'm being interviewed on national TV!"

I'm a pretty self-confident individual, and I'd be willing to bet that I'd be noticeably agitated if I were in her shoes. That last part of the interview in particular just seemed like a front to hide her anxiety. :shrug:

She is talking to a fucking freak with a perma-smile plastered on her face. She is trying to be herself without being rude, she has to 'be normal' to an extent. She is realising self promotion is difficult when you are trying to sell yourself to people you likely hold in contempt.

It not a syndrome or a disorder, if thats what you were hoping for. It is just normal behaviour. Beleive it or not, 'TV personalities' are not themselves on air, it takes practice and there is an unrealistic standard on mainstream TV. So for someone who ;ikely isnt 'trying to be TV normal', it would be odd speaking to someone like that. The interview was really contrived, you can tell the interviewer didnt actually give a shit.

Also, apart from all that, she is way more normal than the average person in Melbourne.  Freaks gravitate there. Awesome place.

She's a musician on TV. I think she handled the interview well, perhaps she was a little nervous.

I know I'd probably make a much larger bufoon of myself on television.:shrug:

This is the vibe I got too. Her lyrics often kind of tease apart the whole cookie-cutter lifestyle, so to compromise on a major news network seems to grind her gears a bit. It's just not her style. Her performances seem very spontaneous and quirky, and not reducible to these types of interviews.

How do I think I'm special? I'm merely talking about an awkward interview I thought was interesting. You're extracting some elitism that isn't there. It's not even implied. You're just trying to be negative and condescending.

"Everybody, everybody, everybody" is in the same big boat in the long run (scroll: this death kick of yours. Old age is tough, eh?), and we're certainly all humans who share the same general behavior. But I'm talking about a particular instance where we can infer someone's emotional state based on their specific reactions. This video is an isolated case. What if you visited a research library and every page in every book just said, "everybody, everybody, everybody is in the same boat." How insightful.

There was nothing special or unusual about that interview in any way as others here noticed.

I don't think there is anything strange with her demeanor at all. The first thing that is apparent is she is introspective you can see her going inward and thinking and then looking up and communicating that thought out.

There is nervousness for sure, and some of her smiles are exaggerated by that nervousness, but they seem completely genuine until the one you point out at the end. This last smile seems to be a self effacing type thing where she is acting out the caricature of being prideful yet doing it tongue in cheek.



I found the person interviewing her to have less than genuine smiles. But that's part of her job description.




hmmm I just had a thought maybe what you are picking up on is your own reaction to seeing the girls nervousness, your own internal conflict reasonating with hers.

This is also a good point. We have to factor in the observer when accounting for any measurement. I tend to be empathetic and often experience minor social anxiety, so I tend to be more sensitive to other people who show signs of it.

This nit-picky fascination isn't really about Kimbra or myself though, it has more to do with body language, gestures, and facial expression as being indicative of emotional states - an interest that was recently heightened after watching a History Channel documentary called The Secrets of Body Language. It isn't very profound, but it helps to remember even the everyday means of communication can be highly symbolic.

cool thanks for the vid one of my current projects is to make a study of body language, I realize it bugs the shit out of me not knowing what people think about me. I'm sure its plainly obvious from their expressions and body language I've just been to afraid to look at it.

although judging from the shows about aliens the history channel isn't the most reputable source of information...

Television in general isn't.

I think it's become a mockery of itself and has to continually upgrade its outlandishness to compete with the desensitized ADD generation and the fact that, in a way, we're repeating a lot of the same stories and information over and over.
