My rainy hiking trip
    #16164704 -

Hey all, it has been raining a bit the last couple days, and I thought yesterday it was supposed to stop.  Figured it would be a good time to go out for my first ever mushroom hunt.  I went to a local state park by me.  When I got there in the morning it was still raining, and continued to rain for 75% of the time I was there which kinda sucked (but became really cool after I ate the mushies I brought with me ha).

There was one part were I was just walking through a bit of a canyon area and around the corner I heard this very high female voice singing in the distance.  As I moved closer it sounded better and better.  I eventually passed here (and thought it was an indian for a bit haha) and met up with her and her bf.  It was just really majestic hearing that voice out there since there were not many people out there on that rainy day.

If you want to suggest an ID on what I have posted that would be great, otherwise I am just showing some pictures off.

Polyporus squamosus?

I believe this is chicken of the woods, correct?  I was pretty excited when I saw these.  I remember seeing them in a book awhile back and thought they were pretty cool.  I spotted them from a good 100 feet they were so big and colorful.

your 5th photo is a Stereum species, maybe Stereum hirsutum.

I'd agree with that, cool find.  I've never found one of these.

yep!  nice find.  What type of trees where around? What general area are you posting from?

Cool story about the lady singing, that would have been awesome!

2-3. Mycena maybe?
6. looks really familiar to me, I feel like I have been there (is this park in TN, NC, or KY?)
5. I think 5 is Stereum complicatum (could be hirsutum, but S. hirsutum is larger and noticeably hairy).

TBH, I've only ever found S. hirsutum and I'm still not sure how to separate the two.  Even comparing on MO I have a hard time seeing the differences in some of the photos.

Thanks.

I there are a ton of the polyporus squamosus around there.  Those were just the biggest ones I saw yesterday.

And there are a lot of oaks and cedars where I was.

Thanks.  And it is in IL, Starved Rock State Park, so you close to the right area.  Really cool place.

I just googled each of those and would say these looked like S. hitsutum.  There were dozens of down trees yesterday that had these.  Thanks

Thanks.  I was trying to get her to grab on to the end, but we were not on the same page.  She was probably looking for her stick which was not around us ha.
