My elderly aunt celebrates a clean bill of health
    #16162228 -

She had breast cancer and was afraid it had spread and has been going through tests for years. This final round found her free of the dreaded disease and she is celebrating.

Sounds like a normal human reaction. Here is the deal: she is devout evangelical Christian who has lived her Biblical three score and ten and was poised to go to paradise for all eternity to be with her beloved Savior.

If someone truly believed that, why celebrate? It seems on some level she does not really believe the myth.

If I was ready to sail to Tahiti to be surrounded by beautiful women in a tropical paradise, I would be pissed if the cruise was cancelled.

gee how interesting, maybe you should rub her face in it. It could give her a fatal heart attach for which she would be eternally grateful.

Gee, I never thought of that!

:tard:

Actually, I am happy for her as I do not believe in Eternal Reward (unless you have a coupon).

Ever notice how people with stigmata get wounds on their hands even though it has been proven that hands could not support a body with just a nail through them? (Unlike this more anatomically correct painting.)

It seems this problem is inseperable from religious belief.

Almost all of it falls apart on even cursory examination- I suspect many religious folks are essentially living Pascall's wager and continuing for cultural/social reasons.  Chuch is a place you can go and have friends who recognize your collective superiority to the godless masses.

Especially amongst old people or those who've spent a lot on their faith- the amount of dissonance caused by even a cursory examination of their beleifs is likely unbearable.

I see the failure of many Christians to know anything about the bible to be a big indicator of these doubts and cynical maneuverings- if you really believed you had a book from god I would dare say you'd be somewhat familiar with it.  Hell, its not that long a book, it would be simple to know all of it (especially the gospels) by spending two hours a week reading it- but almost all don't.

So do they really believe, or is it just a cultural artifact that can't be shrugged off without pain?

I think Becker and the TMT people can answer that.  My dad is a fundy christian and one of the most terrified humans I've ever seen. He's going to heaven and yet I don't ever remember seeing him happy.

Jesus: "This shit is seriously erotic!"

Anyway, the paradise motif in all religions and doctrines is based on the fact that God is Bliss, and You are God. Do a little algebra and you'll see that You are Bliss!!!

I wonder if religious people seriously believe the hocus pocus, or deep down know its all bullshit.

A cognitive dissonance.
