whole milk consumption
    #15988361 -

I'm pretty underweight and am exercising 4 days a week with my kettlebell and doing mad pullups.  Anyways, I'm looking to get as many calories as possible.  I've found whole milk to be a good way to get protein and calories I need to put on some pounds.  I'm not looking to gain too much fat per se.  I just have an INSANELY fast metabolism so every bit counts.  I currently weigh 143 pounds, am 5'11'', and am 25 years old.  I currently drink about 1/2 gallon per day.  Pop culture teaches that whole milk is a "very bad thing"; however, how bad is it really at this point in my life?

have you tried vegetables?

I find I gain the most weight with vegetables and fish.

Are you eating a gram of protein for every lb of body weight?  Whole milk is good because you will get the casein, slow burning protein.  However, I wouldn't rely on it as my main source.  Eat 3-4 eggs every day for breakfast, and then fish, chicken, beef, or beans in every other meal.

"Pop culture's" ideas about nutrition are almost completely backwards from reality.  Most of the studies were funded by big agra or the pharmaceutical industry.  Scientists who didn't tow the party line had their careers ruined.  People's health has only gotten worse following their absurd advice.  You could drink a gallon a day and be completely fine.

I've been on both sides of the argument with this one...

A co-worker was drinking a gallon of whole milk a day (milk and squats routine) to try and beef up. He was inconsistant, got no gains and was shitting all the time. At the time i was reciting the party line "milk is bad."

Now for forshadowing - I drank a gallon of 1% everyday my entire life, from the time i was a toddler until i was 17. I stopped drinking it completely when i moved out...

NOW - at 26, i've just reintroduced a couple glasses of whole milk per day into my diet and I feel insanely better with it. Same with my girlfriend, who has always been "anti milk." - I find I heal faster and am more completely satiated after drinking milk, and it absolutely without a doubt helps repair muscle damage from working out.

How bad is it? - From what i gather, if you had a slow metabolism and were inactive the extra fat could pile on your body. However, in your situation, milk might be your best friend to add some weight...

That said Milk does have it's downside (antibiotics and BGH in the US) it's also inflammatory ...

I take it with a grain of salt - I don't really believe this study or that study and don't know who to believe, so if it intuitively feels good for me, i go with it.

Also - Kettlebell will not add weight. It will change your body composition, and maybe add a couple lbs if your really "wet noodle" scrawny .. but you will not see any serious size gains with it.

Pullups have potential - but again, upper body only really. Add some pushups to the equation at the very least...

You'll see it here again and again - full body compound exercises are your key to gain all over size and strength. Squats, Deadlifts, Rows, Overhead presses, Cleans and Olympic lifts are the recipe to gain weight.

In addition - adding protein powder to your milk, if you are exercising sufficiently enough, will add to your gains and your situation is probably a good idea.

Daily, I eat beef/chicken paired with broccoli for dinner, lentil salad w/ onion/tomato/pepper throughout the day, 1/2 gallon whole milk, pita/hummus for a snack, and a few pieces of fruit.  If I wake up early enough, I will have 4 scrambled eggs in the morning.  So far, I have not seen any good fish in Colorado.  It's pricey and looks pretty rough.  Given the controversial nature of milk, I opted for the horizon organic brand which does not add hormones or antibiotics.  I think it tastes better than the grocery store brand.  I was raised on skim milk which I always thought tastes like garbage and stopped drinking milk entirely once I graduated high school.  Whole milk is much more filling and I definitely agree it adds something to being completely satiated that few other foods do.

True.  I'm working on a limited budget so don't really have the money to spend on a gym at this point so I'm kind of limited.  I will definitely integrate pushups back into my routine and add squats at least while holding my kettlebell.  I really like the total body workout I get with it.  I do intend on getting a gym membership eventually; however, I'm trying to do this in stages so I don't invest too much money without proof that I will stick with it.  I exercised just doing resistance exercises for a month before I got my kettlebell to prove to myself that I wouldn't puss out and waste money on equipment I wouldn't actually use.  I'll probably work out for 3 or 4 months with the kettlebell and then move on to a gym membership so I can have access to more equipment.

Horizon is ultra-pasteurized factory farmed milk.  I would not recommend it.

Try one of these sources instead:

Other than that I would say that you really have to eat a LOT if you are trying to bulk.

How much money per gallon am I looking at for the smaller farms like that?  Do they typically have co-ops in town or do I have to drive to the actual farms?

I have no idea about Colorado.

Where I live milk gets delivered to a pickup point.

It will definitely cost more than factory farmed milk, but real food costs real money.  It tastes better and is way better for you.  Plus you can feel better about not supporting inhumane treatment of animals.

Yeah.  It really is a shame how expensive quality food is.  It's almost as if you have to sacrifice fun to eat well.  I'll check out the prices when I get back in state.  Thanks for the info mate.

Yeah, I've been eating about triple the amount I was eating before and supplementing with pulls of nuts throughout the day.  At first, I ate cashews then I switched to peanuts because they're cheaper, and now I'm on almonds as they are cheap and more nutritious.  It's a good source of calories when I'm on the run.

I did the same as you OP, starting out the KB.

KB and running was my main source of exercise for a good year before i purchased an Olympic weight set...

Deadlifts definitely changed my body composition, really filling in my core/hips/legs, and now presses and rows paired with pushups are starting to add on some upper body size. However, i am still not as dedicated as i should be, and my caloric intake is pretty low so my gains are modest at best.

Anyways, good call on building a routine and lifestyle change with the KB. Definitely plan on adding at the very least Rows, Presses, Deadlifts and Squats though in the future.
