Yes, like I said, the VAST majority of k9's are trained for alerting on the big 4. Cannabis, heroin, cocaine, and amphetamines. It's like that because those are the most commonly used drugs.

Sure the dogs can be trained to smell probably any substance that has psychoactive properties, but in probably 99% of the cases, it's a waste of money and resources to train dogs like that.

That sure did make it easy on me when I was selling mushrooms in my early 20's. I got pulled over for a burned out headlight one night (it had just burned out when I turned the lights on when I was coming home from a friends, no auto parts stores were open at 2am) and the officer that pulled me over had a drug dog. He ran it around my truck and even though I had a little under 2 pounds of mushrooms in the truck, the dog never alerted to anything and he never asked to search my truck, even though I was above the legal limit and high. I passed all the field sobriety tests, he figured a breathalyzer was pointless, gave me a ticket for the headlight and sent me on my way.

Yeah, I think it was partly to do with how I was dressed. I had a nice pressed collared shirt on and a really nice leather jacket. And it partly the fact that I had for some reason COMPLETELY forgotten I had split a joint with my friend right before I went home. And I had completely forgotten I had bag of mushrooms in my truck so big, the DEA would have probably gotten involved. So I wasn't nervous or paranoid at all. That saved my ass big time. It's also really surprising that the drug dog didn't pick up on the smell of cannabis on me, since I had literally just smoked 15-20 minutes prior to getting pulled.

Whenever I would drink at my friends house and drive home, I'd always get a few hits in before leaving to chill me out so I wouldn't drive like a maniac on the back roads leading to my house. If I didn't get high, I was pretty prone to driving way too fast since there were always no other cars on that particular road at that time of night.

It just so happened that on that particular night, there was a police car parked at the only gas station (hell, the only store on that road and the only time a cop was sitting there after the thousands of times I've traveled that road). He saw the headlight out and followed me. I didn't even notice him until right before he pulled me over. I looked back and saw those slightly slanted crown vic turn signal lights and was like "oh shit". But I wasn't speeding and I wasn't swerving at all. I did cross the yellow lines around a steep S curve after he was following me and he asked me about it. I explained it away saying that I had seen so many accidents on that section of the road and it was sleeting lightly, so I wasn't going to take the chance of going into a slide in my big ass SUV. He totally agreed with me, especially since there were multiple skid marks on the road where people had wrecked right there.
