Okay now I know this subject has been discussed before but I am extremely confused as to how a K9 actually even works and am starting to think its pretty much 95% false alerts. I'm basing this on the following situations.

-I've fish bowled a car and walked right out and into an airport right by a K9 and it didn't even move. How can a K9 smell a double vaccum sealed zip of bud but not smell freshly smoked weed all over clothing?

-An friend of a friend was stopped by a police officer for questioning for something not involving drugs, and the officer happened to have a K9 sitting right next to him and right next to my friends pocket which had 2 gs of stinky ass bud and a g of cocaine. Once again, dog didn't flinch. How is this possible?

-Finally, if you smoke semi regularly in your car, and have a K9 unit come, regardless of if there is bud in the car or not shouldn't it instantly pick up on the stale marijuanna odor?

I'm not sure they're trained to pick up on the smell of smoked marijuana.

The dogs are only meant to give alert when ordered to if the officer did not give the dog permission to search or give him the command the dog will do nothing what so ever until the officer allows him to.

They are very very well trained and behaved.


and who knows maybe the dog doesn't know the difference b/w fresh bud and smoke.

And also maybe the dog didn't get a wiff of your shit or your buddy's so you both got lucky...but to stop a cop and talk to him...my fuck man:facepalm:

Barry Cooper's "Never Get Busted" video has a great segment on police dog training and use.  He used to be a police dog handler/trainer and has pretty good insight on their methods and why/how they work.  From what I remember from the video, it explains that dogs detect odours individually as opposed to a mixture like humans do (eg, a dog will smell and identify a mixture of weed and coffee as 2 individual scents, whereas most humans simply smell the combination of the 2 scents).  This is why masking drug odours with other, stronger scents doesn't always work - the dog can smell all scents distinctly.  He goes on to explain that drug dogs tend to be very fixated on their reward after their search, and sometimes they want the reward sooner so many have a tendency to indicate false positives.  Usually dogs are not punished for false positives, so it is in their best interests to signal more often than not.  Also the relationship between handlers and their dogs are usually pretty tight, so it can be easy for a handler to signal a dog to react as if a smell is there when it may not be.  The dog will always do what the handler indicates because it knows if it does what the handlers wants, it will get it's reward.  This is why I think police dogs are not a very reliable tool for finding drugs.  Although there isn't much if any data on the subject, i would be willing to bet that police dogs are not very reliable at all.

As for why they didn't smell drugs on you or your friend, i think the previous response about being not being told to go on their search applies generally... just my guess though.  ANyway, check out Barry Cooper's videos for more information.

What the fuck are you talking about? So your telling me that when I'm walking down the street and a cop throws on his lights and tells me to get on my knees because I look like a suspect of a robbery that just occured I was supposed to not open my mouth or tell him I plead the fifth when I was 100% innocent? It took maybe 5 minutes of talking for the situation to be diffused, simple mix up that was solved by calmly answering the officers questions then walking away rather than acting shady and refusing to answer. I didn't walk up and strike up a conversation with a cop with a K9 thanks for the concern though.

Maybe the K9s enjoy smelling the droogz. I got stoned today and went grocery shopping and happened to park next to an undercover cop with a german shepard and a shotgun in the front seat! :awehigh:

you said your friend asked them about drugs while he had coke and dope on him? Why ask a cop about drugs and you said you walked into a airport after smokign dope and smelling of dope??why put your self in that situation.?

Can you please tell me where it says I asked a cop about drugs? It actually says the complete opposite but I'll help you out if you can't read a sentence. Secondly, it is not a crime to smell of weed nor is it a crime to be under the influence of marijuanna if you do not have any on your person so I don't see what situation I put myself in. Excuse me for getting high in a state that has weed decriminalized before a flight.

SO to beat a drug sniffing dog.....leave fresh dog treats under your seats and everywhere a dog would notice them then when the canine comes in it will eat all the food and refuse to do any actual work cause it already had its fill of rewards.

But yes it is illegal to smell like marijuana or be under the influence of it im pritty sure because marijuana itself is illegal all im wondering is why you put your self in the "heat" to get a drug dog to notice you (airport/smoking/walking in smelling like dope??? Why all the heat?)

What planet are you from?  Possession of Marijuana is illegal.  Consumption is legal.  As long as you do not have any drugs on you, the police can't charge you with anything...

You can't get a DUI while walking through an airport.  Walking under the influence of marijuana is legal.  Driving under the influence is not.

What does eating acid and Jerry Garcia have to do with smoking pot before a flight?

I guess I will have to try some tabs before I get onto a plane again ...If I remember last time I was on one it was the most boring fucking part of my life 200+ people in a titanium can flying sky high shitting and farting and ordering peanuts to go...I almost lost it.
