How much do you think a week trip to Europe costs?
    #15908582 -

Say Germany, Italy, and France.

-No tour guides. Just you and maybe a friend exploring.

-hotel

-Lets include food in the total cost. I wonder if its possible to eat cheap on a trip like that? Could you go to the grocery store and buy some groceries and then cook them in a hotel room on maybe a hot plate or something?

-No heavy drinking but maybe a few drinks.

-Maybe a few museums.

-Plane tickets

What do you think the cost would be?

I'd sat at least 5 grand just to be safe. Don't want to end up in the new hostel movie man..

I would ballpark it at $3000 at the low end.  Really depends on your flight as the costs are pretty varying depending on what kind of deal you can get.

Not buying plane tickets and hotel WAY in advance is going to cost you the most.  Im talking about months before you leave

Hostel. lol. Yea that would suck ass.

Wow 5,000 and 3,000 for estimates?

I was totally guessing it would be more!

I thought plane tickets would be 3,000 alone. Maybe I should look them up for fun!

I guess they would have cheap hotels too. Like a hundred or less a night. So that would make for cheap rooming. Its just the food part that I would worry about. I eat a lot but I would never try to afford eating out every day. Way too costly.

I mean, you would be eating only what you cook and staying in cheap as fuck hotels and booking your flight months in advance and not going crazy on the booze.  I think it could be done for 3000 but I would definitely bring more just in case.

If you choose to sleep in hostels they are generally cheaper, you get to meet other travellers (from all over the world) and you can cook your own stuff in their kitchen.

only one week?  you intend on exploring three countries in only one week?  man.. that's kinda lame.  hardly seems worth the expense, tbh.

if you could stretch that to two, maybe even three weeks, you'd get a lot more for your money.  there's quite a bit you can do to save money.  i'd say the most significant way to save money would be couchsurfing.  often times hosts will allow you access to their kitchen so you can pinch pennies by cooking your own food (and maybe a little something for the host as a show of gratitude).  however, as a new member, it sometimes can be a bit tough breaking into the community seeing as how you won't have any friends, references, or vouches yet.

another key to saving money is buying your tickets wayyy ahead of time.  ryanair, easyjet, etc often sell tickets for obscenely low prices if you buy midweek tickets well ahead of time.  of course, the ultimate budget-travel option is hitchhiking, but that's only something you can do with a fairly open time frame.

i wouldn't really know how to approximate a cost for your intended style of traveling.  but i can tell you that when i had my "euro-trip", i was able to travel for 2 weeks shy of one full year on less than 10 grand.

Oh my. Thats impressive. You must know how to work your money. Commendable!

If I went I would probably book my tickets WAY ahead of time. Months. Probably 4-5 months.

Well the quality of accommodation depends on the individual place. All of the places I have stayed (Spain) have been very clean and the staff very friendly. Check out some reviews of potential hostels in the area you're going to.

There isn't as much privacy as you usually share a dorm with a few others but from my experience, other people are understanding and keep the noise down etc.

IMO it's much easier to chat to people in hostels compared to hotels, as the majority of people will be in their 20s and also travelling. You might get some good recommendations of places to see from fellow travellers. They aren't tour guides out to make money off you.

If you're looking for a cheap, basic place to sleep for the night and don't mind sharing a room then check out hostels. Most have a shared kitchen so you just cook your food and clean up behind you.

I'd highly recommend it.

Do you think it would be hard to go to germany by yourself without a guide?

Do lots of people speak english?

I was looking at flights into Berlin but what if I flew in and lodged in a small country side town. Would it still be possible to somehow communicate?

You can definitely spend less than a 1000€ (without plane tickets of course) for a week but it all depend on the comfort you want and how you travel once you're in Europe.
Like tiny_rabid_birds said, you can forget about seeing 3 countries in 7 days...

A room in an okay hostel shouldn't be more than 50-75€ per night even in popular cities. It'll be much cheaper if you don't mind sleeping in 'dorms'.
Hostel are very popular in Europe but if you're not into the whole backpacking thing it might be annoying. Most hostel have a place where you can cook, but not 'regular' hotels.

Know in advance where you'll like to go and buy train/plane tickets in advance. Car sharing is also a good and cheap way to travel.

There's a lot of free museums otherwise they shouldn't be more than 10-15€. You can find cheap but nice places to eat and drink everywhere so don't worry about that.

PM me if you're curious about CouchSurfing. I hosted more people than I can remember and I'll be able to help you out. Beside not paying for accommodating (do not use it only to save money as it's not made for that) It's a great way to get in touch with the local population and find people who would be willing show you around and have a drink.

I am willing to pay 200-250 dollars a night for something decent. I want to live it up a little. I wont be going till next summer or spring but still. Planning ahead is always a good thing.

I would like a pretty decent hotel. Something nice and friendly.
