Shiitake oak log cultivation question...

Hey y'all

I'm currently in the process of building a cedar cabin on a heavily wooded, small patch of land in far south central okla which will become the home of the Island Bayou Mushroom Farm. I have access to a free supply of over 30 acres of oak logs about 15 miles away and plan to grow shiitake and oysters.

My hope in posting this is that someone will be familiar with the Hypoxylyn Cankor fungus and can answer my question. This fungus is a basic building block of life and somehow has the ability to know when a tree is weak, in this particular case, when the tree is under stress due to extreme drought conditions. We , of course, are located in the heart of a drought stricken area and several of our large oaks are dying as a result of Hypoxylyn infection!! There is no treatment or cure....first sign is that the bark starts falling off of the base of the trunk and works it's way upward...the smooth undersurface of the tree turns a powdery brown color. According to our county ext agent, at first sign of infection, the tree should be dropped and burned (where it falls if possible).

My question is this, would it be safe to use logs cut from the branches of these large trees? All of the bark is intact....the trunks on these trees are close to 2 foot diameter with the first branches approx 30' off the ground and thus far the damage is only 10 foot up the trunk.

the Hypoxylyn Cankor fungus likes dry conditions..and already possible fungi infected wood

your best bet is to use fresh clean oak..the best way to tell if its clean ...is to drill into some and look for clean white shavings...
or pink if its a red oak
contamed oak will have a darker beige to brown color

Ive done shiitake on oak before that was not perfect...and it did fruit
but sparsley so

compaired to cleaner oak logs
