Purifying Logs Before Innoculation?
    #1544867 - 05/13/03 01:13 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I found some Oak logs from a large tree that had been chopped down. They are probably eight inches in diameter, and three feet long each, and cut down in Feb, or march, judging by the fact that they are all the way dry through and through. They were stuck in a shady stack and gathered light green mold.

I still want to use them for Reishi mushroom plugs. How does one clean the logs without poisoning them? Can one soak them in alcohol? I know one can boil them in metal trashcans outdoors on a fire. What are some other methods? Thanks

when using logs there is no sterilization/pasteurization required. this is one of the reasons logs must be inspected, found to be healthy, and inoculated soon after being cut, otherwise any antagonistic organisms present may overpower your mycelium.

Well here in New Orleans all oaks are pretty much already either moldy or covered in lichens. Will this destroy a culture of say 100 Reishi, or Turkey Tail plugs? And also what about if the stumps are dry all the way through. Are they too old then? Does this have to do with wood sugar content? Thanks

The lichens and moulds that you see on trees are only growing on the outside of the living tree. If you are inoculate relatively fesh logs with plugs you are essentially thrusting fungi into the soft underbelly of the trees, where most stuff on the outside never penetrates, so your plug inoculations still stand an okay chance, I think.

Being that large they will take a year to run, but should fruit for years with care. We pre-soak in plain water overnight before plugging.....soak 1x month and spray 1x week..
When we build with cut logs we spray them with bleach water and it kills everything - I wouldn't put anything on mushroom logs at all because you can't wash it out/off.

I know it's said no pasturazation is necessary, but i do it anyway.I soak for 4 hours in 160 F limewater(Ph 12)with 1 cup bleach per 15 gallons of water.I do this wheter it is a natural wood log,or the straw log tek.Don't worry about the bleach,it gets used up real quick.Sit where they can drain overnight. With a log that large, it will take at least a year to colonize.
