My first real grow (Autoflower)

So i've tried growing both indoor and outdoor before with no success. Since then i've learned tons. So this grow im going to consider my first real one.

Here's what I have planned, tell me what you think.
I'm going to order 5 Big Bud Auto-flowering Feminized seeds. This strain supposedly has a much higher yield than other autos, and from seed to harvest is around 2.5 months, not long at all. I have a 400w ballast with both a 400w HM light and a 400w HPS light. I plan on growing 2 MAYBE 3 at a time under these lights, each plant being in a 5 gallon bucket using Miracle Gro moisture control potting soil. I don't plan on adding anything else but water the whole time, no nutes, what do you think? I'm also wondering, since its an auto strain, should I use the lights normally? normal being MH on 16/8 for veg, and then when i see it budding (since its an auto), switch to HPS on 12/12? If that would work, im thinking of maybe keeping it on 18/6 or even 20/4 during veg since i want the highest yield possible, tell me what you think.

First off dont use Miracle Gro Moisture Control, thats not a good soil for weed. Instead mix about a 3:1 ratio of Miracle Gro Peat Moss to perlite. And since its an auto flower you dont have to change the light schedule around, but i would switch to the HPS when it starts flowering. Also i wouldnt go straight to a 5 gallon bucket, roots grow from the center out then circle around, never returning to the middle. Start your germinated seeds in some Miracle Gro Seed Starter soil in plastic cups, then once they pop up with their first 5 fingered leafs transplant them to 1 or 2 gallon pots. You really dont need a 5 gallon bucket unless your growing really huge plants, which your not gonna have with the auto flowers

Alright thanks man. So what would be a good on/off light schedule then? I didn't know that about the root system, thanks for the heads up. Oh and they would start flowering in 16oz party cups? That's insane. Also, i've read that its best to go with 3 gallon buckets for autos just to be safe, some can grow a decent size. I only have 5 gallon ones atm, but ill get smaller ones.

Edit: I seen where you corrected yourself. Instead of flowering you meant the whole first 5 fingered leaves thing, gotcha. :tongue:

Yeah lol i was gonna write to transplant from the cups to a 1 gallon when they have 5 finger leafs then to a 3 gallon when you start flowering, then i remembered autos have a shorter life cycle than normal.

Yea, so should i just move them from the cup after 5 fingered leafs to a 3 gallon bucket and then wait for it to flower? And as for the lights, would a 16/8 work good for both veg and flower? Changing to HPS as soon as flowering starts of course.

Yeah that would work fine, autoflowering strains flower cycles arent triggered by a light cycle so you could theoretically use any lighting schedule you want. Their flower cycles are triggered by time. I believe the original auto flowers (cannabis ruderalis) were native to parts of europe where there would be sometimes 24 hours of light certain times of year so they adapted to the environment to flower automatically without a set light schedule.

Awesome, droppin some knowledge in here lol.
But yea i know that the light cycles dont trigger autos, but I figured more light during veg would produce a higher yield. I read of some people doing 24/0 the whole time until harvest. I would do that, but that extra 6-8 hours of light per day doesn't sound very cost efficient. Oh btw, forgot to ask, should I leave them in the dark for a full 3 days like normal plants right before harvest?

i have never noticed extra dark time or extra light time before harvest to make a lick of difference, honestly.

Yeah i havent either. People say its suppose to make the plant more resinous but i dont see it. What you should do is cut the plants water supply off for a few days before harvest. In my experience it forces the plants to use up the rest of its water supply and makes the trichomes bulge up a bit as the plant tries to catch water droplets.

Wow, didn't know that one was a myth. But i've heard of the water thing too, ill deffinatly be trying that. I'm excited for this grow, if I could get a half oz to an oz per plant id be more than happy, does that seem likely if you take care of them? I know autos are low yielding in the first place, but the big bud strain is supposed to be somewhat higher. The site says 400g/m² whatever that means :tongue2:

That means 400 grams per square meter. So if you have a square meter of space packed with foliage, you can expect 400 grams. Usually tho i only hear of g/m² when talking about scrog grows. Just like shroom growing, theres too many variables to be able to give an estimate. But id say an ounce per plant would be reasonable

Oh well, I guess ill find out eventually lol. And to be clear, I don't need any extra nutrients or anything right? Just the Miracle Gro peat moss and perlite at 3:1 and im set, besides the seed starting mix?
Ballin on a budget.

Well nutrients would greatly help, i always use fox farm products, but they can be expensive. I guess you could go natural with it and not use anything.

Yea I was researching those earlier, the set of 3. Grow big, tiger bloom, and big bloom? I mean if it helps out with yield then i'm all for it. I've read tho that you shouldn't use the ratios they give you or you could end up with ferti-burn.

Start it at 24/0 light and then when you see flowering move to 22/2 or 20/4, I've heard good things about that.

Everything else sounds good, but don't expect much more then an ounce per plant (if you're lucky).

please don't use miracle gro. Kellogg's Premium Potting Soil is a cheaper equivalent to Fox Farm Ocean Forest and you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot for around $5 a bag; it has bat guana and fertilizers in it already so you could essentially get away with using no extra nutrients by just topping off your soil from time to time.

i would recommend getting some nutes though. all you really need is Fox Farm Grow Big and Big Bloom, start with ~1/4 to 1/3 the amount the bottles call for to get a feel for how your plants react and how much food they want. indica dominant strains tend to be really heavy feeders but you should still start out sparingly. you can purchase all of this (soil and nutes, various other supplies) for about $40-$50 tops and you will get a much MUCH better yield than going the route you are talking about going. miracle gro is absolute crap for weed.

ad far as light cycle, i would just blast them with 18/6 the whole time since they are autos and are going to flower once they hit a certain age no matter what you do. use the MH while they are vegging and the HPS once you notice them start to show signs of flower.

Yea i usually use half strength and i use all three as well as the Cha Ching, Beastie Bloomz, and Open Seasame solid suppliments. They work amazingly well, the cha ching particularly really helps trichome production ime

i only use Grow Big and Big Bloom, Snowstorm towards the middle of flower coupled with blackstrap molasses and then a super good flush. i have always felt using the entire nutrient system (that goes for all of them, not just FF) is a waste of money. i have not experienced any significant difference in yield, in fact, i think i end up with more by not using the entire (extremely expensive) systems because there is much more room for error, especially with the solubles.

Well, that pic made my mouth water lol.
I looked up that kellogg soil. It contains peat moss plus perlite, and for less than half the price I was gona drop on miracle gro lol. As for the nutes, im having mixed feelings about them. If I did get some, how do you all feel about General Hydroponics Flora Series? It has FloraGro, FloraBloom, and FloraMicro. I'm pretty sure its the same as the fox farm set plus its cheaper, any thoughts? And ive decided if i do, im gona test nutes on one plant and let the other do its own thing and compare the harvest.

I really like the solid supplements, i really noticed a difference with trichome production using the cha ching and the calyxs swelled nicely with the beastie bloomz. I guess its personal preference, i know people that hate fox farms line up and swear by Advanced Nutrients.

On an off topic note, have you ever breed your own crosses Acid?
