Speakers blown :(
    #15741980 -

long story short,  I used to have an amp that blew allot of tweeters,  I switched over to a sony stereo amp.  Its an older one and a beast for 100 watts.

I have these 50$ sony speakers, actually 2 pairs with bad tweeters.  They can handle 100 watts each but apparently not with treble blasting at full.

one tweeter is very quite and the frequency range sounds bad, the other is cracking.

Should I spend 30$ on a decent pair of tweeters or just buy new speakers.  I think I know what I want but I'm a bit worried that I might have to rig it some way if it doesn't fit.  I can cut wood and hot glue I guess.

The bass is not that amazing so I was planning on getting a low end sub at some point, other than that they normally sound crystal clear.  Treble is the most important part to me so if I got them sounding better than new that would make me happy.

These are recommended on parts express, http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=275-070

They should sound a good bit better right?  And will they not blow so easy? since they should be better quality.

Once I get a sub I will cut out the bass on my amp and blast it as loud as it can go without distorting, so allot of power will be going to the tweeters.  My sound card is also way louder than normal onboard puter sound.

those tweeters are awesome! High dollar though, they will definately be better than the ones that came in the sonys. Can you tell us the model number on the sonys, that way I could check them out and make a reccommendation. It really depends a lot on the design of the cross-over, but in use those tweeters could easily handle over 200w rms with the right cross-over.
Distortion from the amp is what kills tweeters. Regardless of how loud you have it turned up. If you here distortion, then it must be over 5%(THD) and thats a tweeter killer

I take it they are ss-b1000's? They have 1" tweeters and an spl of 87bb/1w/1m, so the replacements you are looking at are bigger(so the boxes would have to be cut) louder, by 2db(which will make them really bright) but they are your best choice, on a spl level. I've ripped into a lot of speakers, and IMO those sonys are not worth repairing, the woofers have small magnets, they can't play very low, are made of 1/2"mdf, so they aren't that solid either. I would just buy/build some decent ones. The crossovers may/maynot be suitable for some new speakers. It probably just has a cap for high-pass and thats it. If so, they are jusnk, a good cross-over should have AT least, 2 caps and 2 inductors (12db/octave for the woofer AND the tweeter)

I got a pair of those and a pair of the older Sony SS-MB150H, the Same thing pretty much except the new ones seem a tiny bit louder and the front is plastic instead of wood.

Man I don't know about the crossovers,  I'm using one ss-b1000 with a now completely broken tweeter, and a SS-MB150H with silly putty for a tweeter(no tweeter), and there playing up to 15khz down to 10Hrz, atleast from youtube anyway.

I don't a whole lot about speakers but Iv'e heard allot better ones before and these sony's continue to amaze me.  Have you heard them?  The specs say they can only go as low as 50Hrz, but Iv'e heard(20hrz)/seen them play as low as 10Hrz.  There must be no crossover on the woofer because they play everything.  And the tweeter probably has a lowpass at like 1Khz and thats it.  I'm confused what a high-pass would be used for besides making the woofer not play treble?

If these speakers got any briter I would actually <3 that.  That and a sub would be perfect for electronic music.  especially if I get a sub I wont be needing new woofers for a while.

It seems to me like these would be worth repairing (maybe the old all wood ones).  If I got new speakers I would probably buy the same ones anyways .

It seems like I should be able to drop in the new tweeters and get the same or better sound which is totally worth the price to me.  If I have to get crossovers I will, but they seem fine to me.

I would rather turn this into an ongoing project, and eventually completely rebuild them, just using the shell.  I don't have enough money to start from scratch or buy decent speakers but I would like to have a little bit better sound :/

What do you think?

I just read this somewhere..I don't know what it means: looks like the woofer connects directly to the amp, and there is a single 1.5 uF capacitor on the tweeter.

that means the cross-over is just a cap on the tweeter. It rolls off a 6db/octave and protects the tweeter from bass. The woofer has no cross-over and plays full-range. In a good cross-over the woofer has an inductor(at least) that cuts off the high frequencies at the right place. If the woofer and tweeter can play the same frequency, that makes a hump in the response where they overlap. Thats undesirable. The reason speaker makers get away with that is that they measured the woofer response and then cross the tweeter over at a higher frequency. The problem with that is woofers don't have good frequency response at high frequencies, so they sound muddy.
Those tweeters would do the trick, and be fine with just the cap on there, but I wouldn't spend too much time or money on a system built around them.

no way. If you did the math(I ain't going to right now) that 5 1/4 woofer would have to move over 1.5 inches (xmax of 37mm) to create that tone. They can't do that, plus the amount of power (in watts) it would take to move the speaker that far would fry it(over 300 watts )

Thanks allot for the help.  I think I'll order those tweeters soon.  Later when I have a sub, I might get crossovers and do something like 100-3000 (less range for the crappy woofers ) on the woofer and 3000+ on the high.

How do I know when it starts to roll off? also I just found out my newer speakers have 1.2 uF capacitor on the tweet.

idk... I can clearly hear a 20hz test and its not the woofer rattling which happens at higher volumes. I might take a video of them,  it looks pretty sick.  They gotta be doing almost an inch back and fourth also.  Not saying they have great bass or anything but it might not be that necessary to use a sub for a pretty full range.  Someday a sub will take the strain off my amp and speakers so it doesn't matter anyways.

when you hear that test tone, what you are hearing is harmonics, not the fundamental tone
http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=1 has a real easy chart, it says 16,563 hz.(1.2 uf @ 8 ohms) The highest you can hear is 20,000. Basically useless.
